Could you be more specific? What exactly are guys like Lomo and Usyk lacking skillwise, compared to their predecessors? Do you see any specific flaws or deficiencies?

Ya it was said with a bit of humor but he has improved his defense and refined some of the Pirog'esque moves. More importantly he's a very big CW (mindblowing to think he used to be a SMW) with great volume, punch variety and combos, and some really weird but serious power. It doesn't look like he's putting much on the shots by guys like Durodola who have a rock solid chin are rocked by them. He arguably handled Durodola better than Briedis did.

He isn't as fluid as Pirog but he does have nice D (slips, blocks, upperbody movement, level changes) footwork and has retained the hand speed and overall agility of a smaller fighter. I was saying in another thread that not only does Briedis vs Gassiev need to happen but Glowacki has been unfairly forgotten since he got left out of the tourney (which he wanted to be in) and i view Vlasov as a legit dark horse. I don't know who would come out on top if that foresome faced off and i can see Vlasov having the size and skills to exploit the seeming weaknesses of both Briedis and Gassiev.

He has the size advantage and defense to box with Briedis at long range but the skills to crowd him and get the better of him at midrange where Briedis isn't comfortable. As for Gassiev Maxim has the size, footwork, defense, high volume output and excellent punch variety to employ many of the same things Usyk did to shut down his stalking power hitting game and not let him get his feet set.

Usyk's got it as of now for me.

Holyfield fought there three more times, but Usyk's got the better overall resume. He completely unified a tougher CW division in fewer fights and he's had his biggest wins on the road, which makes it all the more impressive. People wax poetic about road warriors who come up short and get jobbed on the cards....how about full credit for a road warrior who actually wins in everyone's back yards?

100% and the recognition of that significance will grow as time goes on imo. A couple years ago 3 of the 4 orgs said they would do divisional unification tournaments and had a couple conventions about it then, no surprise, the talk disappeared. Also shows what a blessing the WBSS has been and thankfully it seems to be catching on as season 2 looks to have captured the interest and cooperation of the top boxers and their promoters.

Most likely huge quantities of PED's which was how Hollyfield managed to do so well at HW..

Pump Usyk up on the go go juice and he will be ko'ing and going toe to toe just like the champ did..

Part of me wants to scream blasphemy when comparing any cruiser to the real deal or even suggesting he should be taken down from the 1 spot. However, another part of me does recognize that Usyk dominated an elite and proven to be murderous puncher in his backyard with ease this weekend. Add in he collected all 4 belts, looking great in the process and he has an argument. I really want to see more from Usyk now, and I hope he has an impressive few years to go at cruiser or more likely at heavy.

Usyk would make Bellew look like 2 cents. The Ukrainian is the real deal! Fantastic footwork for a man his size ,great ringcraft and boxing brain, hand speed, and conditioning,I was tremendously impressed with his performance!

I agree. The eye test looks fine, I just want to see a little more resume before I would feel that he would be indisputably the best cruiserweight of all time. I don't want hand the grass crown to another Kovalev to find out when he gets hit in the breadbasket he folds like a lawn chair.

2Slyk has the same conundrum as Holyfield, being too good for a diluted division.

If he stays to "break" Holyfields CW resume or even Nelsons defence record, he loses time that could be spent in the more meaningful HW division. Holyfield had the same issue. Its daft to stay at CW when you are this good.

Let's keep in mind the Cruiserweight division was a bit of novelty with just a few years history when Holyfield won the titles. More often than not it was light heavyweights ( Which Holyfield was an amateur ) moving up to the 190-pound limits.

Today the division is one of the best in boxing with fighters turning pro to concentrate on the division with an expanded weight range to 200 pounds.

Usyk is the best Cruiserweight in division history. He has little more to accomplish at Cruiserweight as he has beaten the current #1 and #2 contenders and the #5 contender, all of whom were in their prime when the match happened.

He should move up to heavyweight soon and IMO belongs in the division top ten as soon as he wins his 1st or 2nd heavyweight fight based on ability alone.

I think its perhaps unrealistic to expect cruiserweights to compete at heavyweight. The size gap is now so massive as to make success less probable than in Holyfield era
