Its a different period with a different mindset. You cant tell what a fighters ready for mentally and physically until hes presented with it. There was a question going into the fight about Tyson being tested. In fact Steve Albert kept saying "were seeing Tyson tested". That was the proverbial question about Tyson in his comeback going into the Holyfield fight after he fought basically four powder puffs. Was he prepared both mentally and physically to fight 12 hard rounds if he had to? Blowing out a guy in two or three rounds that offers no resistance and looking great proves nothing to that. Holyfield was chosen because at his physical state he would have offered a huge payday and just enough resistance for a good evaluation of Tyson, and it turned out Tyson was not even good enough for an old faded Holyfield who had a good enough chin and ring savvy to weather Tyson's initial onslaught and expose how not ready he was for a long tough fight. Tyson himself said he stopped being a fighter in 1990, so take it how you want. Holy would have always given him a good scrap, but personally I think even the faded Tyson of 1990 puts up a better performance than the Tyson who showed up in 96.
4 years inactivity Mcneeley - K.O 1 Mathis - K.O 3 Bruno - K.O 3 Seldon - K.O 1 The above does not prepare you for a fight with a grizzled veteran like Holyfield. Whether the outcome would've been different in '90 or '91 I don't know, but Tyson was damaged goods in '96, flattered only by early K.O's of mediocre opposition.
I also was NOT happy with Tyson when he tipped in at 223 pounds for Holy in 1996....... That was a pinch too heavy........... However, even at a ripped solid 218 for the rematch, Tyson was still faded and rusty..... Peace..... Christ, in 2001 against B. Neilsen, Tyson was 239 pounds....... And he was there to pretty stay / remain.... Oh, he got down a tad, but 233 to 234 was his norm when he finally washed-out in 2005....... MR.BILL
Off topic but I was wondering, are there any boxing chatrooms where people talk boxing live?:rasta ten years ago on AOL there was one that you could get on everynight and talk the fights but now I can find none.
To be honest Tyson didn't look in good shape for the first fight, but as you say he was in great shape for the re-match & was still being outfought.
I think commentators (and many of the judges) are generally biased towards champion, and Tyson was still considered the men, despite Douglas loss. He destroyed some decent opponents from this time, so it seemed like he was back, while Holyfield lost to Moorer and Bowe (by KO) and won only with Mercer (and technically with Czyz, but this was far from impressive win). They were just sure Tyson would win (odds were 6:1 just before the fight, so they were in majority), so they were blind were Holyfield kept winning round after round since he was going to lose anyway. BTW, it is strange that most of boxing fans are able to score fights better (on average) than professional judges and commentators.
Holy was thought to be shot in 1996............ His war with Raymond Mercer in '95 and his KO loss to Bowe were considered coffin sealing glue....... And, in truth, Holy wasn't great in TKOing Bob Czyz earlier in '96 on HBO up in Jew York city...... Tyson was rightfully THOUGHT to be the betting Fav. going into the initial fight with Holy in 1996..... But again, I was concerned about Tyson's 223 pounds prior to the fight...... I thought that was bad and off-key.......... Cheers...... MR.BILL
And Evander Holyfield came back at the end of that round, and afew rounds later started speaking to Mike Tyson inside of the ring............. Evander Holyfield was not really that hurt.... Evander Holyfield, took Mike Tyson's double body shot and uppercut in round 5.... And starred right back at Mike Tyson...! This was the point in the fight, where Mike Tyson "**** himself" One of the rounds after that, Mike Tyson tried to touch gloves with Evander Holyfield showing respect....."at the end if the round" Instead of starring him down like he was doing in the early rounds... Evander Holyfield, just turned his back on Mike Tyson when the bell rang and never touched gloves.....
I agree with Judge Dredd........ The group of sorry mothers that Tyson was fed upon release from the cooler were NOT the right guys to eat up and get ready for a seasoned vet like Holy............. And 223 pounds was too much for Holy anyway........ Tyson was mislead and a fool; a complete utter fool....... MR.BILL
