Skills wise it's definitely Tyson. The heavyweight division has never seen a combination of speed, and power like that before. But Frazier has the better career. He would of been great in any era. And he would be ranked higher had he not fought in the possibly the greatest era of boxing. Holyfield is a great too. He capitalizes on his opponents mistakes and is fundamentally sound. But as long as Holyfield continues boxing the harder it is the rank his properly. I really hope he retires before he gets hurt.
I would'nt even bother mate. Exactly. Good thread this. 3 heavyweights who were smaller in stature than their counterparts, but made up for it big time in other areas. Personally i would have Frazier top out of the three. He was tailor made for George, and you could'nt really see anyone else doing that to him. So i don't really subtract a lot from him for that loss. I think h2h i probably having him beating both Tyson and Holyfield. Tyson is a nightmare to rank because of how good he was in the late 80's, and then how far he declined. There was never a fighter before him or maybe never will be again, that excited the world like Tyson. But it's hard to forget how he reacted to being bullied in his losses, and his resume does'nt stand up to Holyfield's and Frazier's. But they never dominated like Tyson did. So it's tricky. Holyfield a fantastic athlete with unbelievable drive and will to win, is a hard fight for anyone in any era. He fought all the best fighters of his generation and his resume speaks for itself. Good thread but if i had to rate them as fighters and in order of greatness i would go; Frazier Tyson Holyfield A hard one to choose but that's how i would go. They aren't far away from each other in the ATG lists.
My issue with frazier is he never really recovered from the foreman defeat. He also never face norton. He got stopped 3 times in 5 fights with ali and foreman. Clearly a great fighter and unlike tyson he can say he beat the best fighters he faced. Holyfield spent much of the 90's as the 1/2 heavyweight in the world. He faced all the fellow greats of his era and was competitive in all his prime losses. I put him below lewis due to their fights but he edges tyson and frazier just about for me.
Agreed. Holy takes the top spot with his greater wealth of accomplishments and two wins over Tyson. Frazier and Tyson are lower because of their briefer peaks, but Frazier's win in the FOTC and Tyson's loss to Douglas puts Frazier over Tyson.
I know what your saying about Foreman, but Joe had already shown everyone what a good a fighter he was. The more i think about Frazier, Tyson and Holy. The harder it is to rate them against each other. I think it boils down to your personal preference towards the fighters.
As you can see from the two posts above, it largely comes down to personal preference with these three. Frazier Tyson Holyfield :thumbsup
I agree definitely. The three are so closely matched. All have their own advantages: frazier is the only one to have beaten the best fighter he faced. Holyfield is the only one to face everyone in his era. Tyson had the most destructive reign and had a decent comeback. They're all next to each other on my list, places 10-12 depending on the day.
