Holyfield as Champ in 1992 . Scrub Bowe and replace him with Tim Witherspoon of 1983 . The Witherspoon which had a claim for victory over Larry Holmes . Do the over hand rights of Witherspoon do enough damage to beat the real deal ??
I think Tim takes it. He fought well against Larry and had him in trouble and arguably won. Holyfield got rocked against Copper and cut by a old Holmes. Without the ko power for Evander to bail him out , probably gets a close decision, a bit like Moore did
Holyfield certainly looked more vun in his first tenure as heavyweight champ. He looked more solid as he got older . Against Bowe ,he put up a great losing performance , firing back after being hurt .I agree with ur post ,I ve got a up for it younger Spoon taking the fight to him and coming off best .It was a great performance against Holmes ,he was unlucky that day , but I reckon Witherspoon would nail it here !
Witherspoon is one of the most underrated boxers, People don't understand that he was totally ripped by Don and Carl King. He didn't bother to train before Bonecrusher and threw the fight. He had WBC champion in 1984 and WBA champion in 1986. Then when he sued the Kings he got a settlement. But the expense was that he never fought one of their fighters ever again and was sidelined and never got a title crack. Don't forget as late as summer 1998 he was ranked in the top 5. Really he is a unsung hero. This content is protected Don King is one of the heartless muthas ever.
Holyfield at his best would win by decision - he's just the better fighter. Sometimes people seem to forget how good he is.
Agreed. Tim puts in a good performance maybe--he can show up with that B game of his---but Evander wins the decision. Too good of a combination puncher and would work all rounds of the fight--unlike Witherspoon. Fun bout to watch. But I like the big heart and competitive nature of Commander Vander to be the one with his hand raised.
This is exactly it. Both at their best Holyfield wins. Average for both Holyfield wins. He's simply the better fighter of the two, and clearly so in my book
He bulked up from just over 200lbs noticeably after Bowe 1 I thought, his shoulders were huge. Both at their best I would give it Holy but Witherspoons career was affected badly by Don King, I don't think we seen the best of him, he had to be disheartened being robbed in every fight under King. Have you ever seen the deductions on his purse ? It was made public years ago. I think he picked up a lot less than a 100,000 v Bruno if I remember right, it made for horrific reading. He was charged stupid amounts for every little thing, anything and he was ripped off. He had Carl King as his manager
I’d go for Holyfield based on his discipline, conditioning and warrior spirit alone. Skill wise, he had a very underrated counter jab that could match Witherspoon and possibly the best counter left hook in the division.
