Pardon my ignorance, but i have never seen this fight. I herad that Dokes gave Holyfield a very tough fight for most of the fight and was well in it. I might watch it later so im wondering if you thought it was an entertaining fight?
it was a very good fight, especially if you look at the tone of the fight at the time. It was Holy's first test. I have all the prefight. They were really hyping it up Holyfield's athleticism and heart won it for him at the end though but it was a helluva fight
I think ive actually seen the prefight, Dokes sounded like a man on a mission in the interviews, he must have known it was his last shot at the bigtime.

I find it a very entertaining fight! It certainly showed evander could/would be a threat in the HW division. IMHO the best HW fight of the last 20-25 years.
Some years ago now, Holyfield was quoted as saying "Qawi and Dokes were the two that made me question boxing. 'Is this what I want to do for a living?' " Dokes gave him hell, though Holyfield mostly held the upper hand. Dokes had no legs anymore, but his hands were still fast, and he was ready to hurt in order to get the job done. The result was one of the best heavyweight fights you'll see.
good analysis and nice quote that's my memory of the fight to. every round i watched was close but generally holyfield was in charge. dokes shoke him on occasion and got a pretty good timing of evander. dokes' toughness was also impressive
a few months after this fight I saw Dokes at a fight card in Orange County California where I lived at the time. He was at some Irvine Marriott fights. I thought, Holyfield beat this guy? Dokes was really a big guy.
reminds me , how overrated my m8 holy was at times . wat wud a prime dokes do ? jesus , Dokes from 1st young fight or against weaver . might well beat holy .
One word that defines this fight is SLUGFEST. The best heavyweight fight that I've seen in my lifetime.
Just after watching the fight. You guys werent wrong, this was an great slugfest! Amazing back and forth action throughout the fight, and a great finish by Holyfield. Evander was ahead until the knockout, but Dokes won quite a few rounds imo and i though he hurt Holyfield at least three times. The 8th round was one of the best rounds of heavyweight action ive ever seen, right up there with the 10th round of Bowe-Holyfield. Dokes fought like a man possesed throughout the fight, a none more so than in the 8th after he had just took a huge beating from Holyfield in the 7th. Dokes showed a lot of desire in this fight, even if he seemed slightly passed his prime. And Holyfield showed his usual vintage heart. It's a pity the fight ended so badly for Dokes though, as he gave a colossal effort.
Before the fight, nobody liked the Dokes chances. Nobody. He was brought in to lose and his chances were no better than that of Thomas. Don't forget Dokes was a 10-1 underdog for the fight. After the fight, a lot of the boxing consensus was if Holyfield struggles this much with a pretty close to washed up Dokes, what is he going to do with a young Tyson?
