is it advisable to hook forwards? i seem to only generate power on my hooks by leaning back a little so in the end when i launch an attack my hooks are not that great or at least my left hook isnt and if i hok forwards i end up off balance...., my right hook is ok...im also rather tall and lanky so im not a great user of short hooks i favor long ones Any advice?
Your hooking technique may be flawed, not sure though. I hook in all directions, forwards, backwards or to the sides.
you will know when your left hook is good you can just feel it, jump around the punch bag and left hook, or be off balance and hook until you just know where your feet have to be.
i find my long hooks dont get as much power as my short hooks but you say your tall and lanky that means your straight punches should have extra leverage and power
yea my straights are pretty powerfull, my jab can be suprisingly hard and upper cuts too but my hooks are really my weak point =(
train your obliques and your core in general. hook power to my knowledge is legs and core way more than your arms.
when i box and use my left hook its more to get people to walk onto my right hand and when im up close i put it to the body real hard so realy you only need a hard short hook
hmmm, hooks differ per style, compare Mayweather / RJJ / Hatton / De La Hoya / Naseem / Barrera / Pazquiao You will see about 4 different styles of hooks favoured by these guys
I would say you shouldnt be "leaning" when throwing it anyway, just throw it out of a balance stance, and if you wanna throw it "forward" step forward, set, and throw it..
Mayweather knocked Hatton out with the check hook, stepped out to the right to counter a cross and then hooked hatton. Watch in on youtube, that's a good one
This is a indifferent subject for me cause I have tremendous power when I loop hooks but when someone tries to do that to me, I can see them coming and have time to react every time. I'd say keep them short and inward when your in close fighting courters with you elbow out. Im also told to throw them balanced and centered unless they're side body shots. Im more of a distance guy with my jabs and straights. Im also fighting at 165 when im 6'0 though.
You are hooking correctly... but if you want to hook going forward, you must step into position with the front foot so you can "come back" with the hook. Hooking going forward is more risky but as you throw the hook, move the front foot forward and let the foot land at the same time the hook lands to make it solid.
