Is this a good idea? It never seems to be recommended and I've heard it leaves you more open to a counter but I can't see how its any worse in that sense then a straight right/left if you throw it fast enough. I've developed a pretty good right hook on the heavy bag over the past few months but haven't had the chance to test it out in any fights or sparring yet.:bbb

I mostly use the right hook up close, but since I'm more squared up then it's less of a disadvantage.

I love that hook but its like RDJ said its best to do it when your in close, kinda loop it so that it scores going around the other mans glove.

Can be a very good punch when you have your opponent cornered. Set it up early by repeatedly pinning your opponent in the corner and hooking (left) off the jab (mix it up body/head). Save the right hook for later in the fight. Let your opponent get complacent coming out to your right hand side, and once the complacency drops in, bang the right hook on his chin as he comes out to the side - works every time!

Edit: Forgot to add, be careful squaring up your stance too much to get this punch in. You will find that as your stance squares up, your left hook will become wider, and you will eat a load of uppercuts and straight rights for your troubles.

On the east coast I NEVER saw the rear hook.
I moved out to Texas and it seems to be a Texas/Mexican staple as part of their overall body assault.

For my southpaw style, any curved, rear-hand punch (ie the overhand and the hook) is a little slower & shorter range than nice straight punching.
I can usually beat an orthodox cross to the punch with a nice, straight left hand.
Due to the lower connect percentage, I tend to use those curved much less frequently.

Right hook to the body is my favourite punch.

I've knocked one guy out (not cold, but he couldn't get up)with a right hook to the head, but my right hook to the body lands over and over and I've had several opponents say after fights that it was the body shots that won me the fight. Even the guy that I knocked out with the hook to the head said that. 'It's hard to fight when you can't breathe' he told me after. :bbb

Tried it out tonight in sparring and it wasn't too bad except for the fact I got too wild with it rather then focusing more on my Jab, it was just Jab-Hook, Jab-Hook.:yep(First ring action since the end of June though, so a bit rusty!) Seems like it could be a good punch if I was a bit more patient.

The punch itself isn't bad, the problem is that it can usually be seen from a mile away and is easily countered.

Yup, as I found out tonight! Never could really see the difference between that and the Left Hook, think I'll just use it sparingly from now on!

The punch you throw should depend on the openings you see. You shouldnt lead with a right hook because you like to throw it. If your opponents gloves are on his ears throw straight punches. If his gloves are infront of his face punch around his gloves. The punch you throw should depend on openings and your distance.

never ever like throwing the rear hook, when i am digging the heels in and just swinging ill throw the right hook followed by the left hook, this is the only time i like throwing it, or same combo to the body followed by left hook upstairs

I also always thought it was kind off horrible to punch off. Unless you're square (in which case it almost ceases to be a hook, or have the traditional advantages of the hook) or are planning to turn southpaw in the wake, it's hard to get fluid off it. Not a great combination punch unless you are very versatile and well balanced IMO.

Its most likely going to be used only in close range body shots.

In amateur it could land to the head, however your opponent merely needs to lift his shoulder a bit to dodge it.

trust me you don't want to be right hooking to the head when he has a jab comen, it wont do.

I dont see the purpose of it far range. Anything from a slip on his right or left would be a right cross. You wouldn't need to hook it. Why would you want to anyway?

I use it to pivot to the right of their jab (both othrodox) and throw a quick right hook to turn them.
