When you guys throw a hook in boxing, do you: a) Throw it in a way that the thumb faces up/palm facesyou? b) Throw it in a way that the thumb faces towards you/palm faces down? I've gotten mixed responses about this. I had a coach tell me once that you always want to throw it with the thumb facing up because that way you are less likely to hurt your wrist or injure the hand; I had a boxer tell me it doesn't matter, and then I had a boxer/instructor tell me that you only want to have the thumb facing towards you when you are fighting up close, in a "phone booth" type of scenario. I'm interested to read what you guys have to say.
Ive always wondered this too. . . It seems like palm down, and with your hand parallel to the ground allows to you "twist" your body through the punch more. . I remember in hte Khan/Maidana fight, this one right hook Maidana winged in there, his palm was down, and it looked perfect - was perfectly parallel to the ground. . . But sometimes when I just throw a lead left hook, it seems like I can get the punch off quicker, and can then turn my body to move away easier. . .
Well i was always taught as canuck's says with palm down but i never felt comfortable throwing my hooks like that. I like to feel the power of the punch go up arm. Anyways i've watched David Haye a few years back on a reality tv boxing show tell a guy who asked same question 'throw it your way, there's no right or wrong way'. I watch Michael Katsidis who would really turn glove over but at times over exaggerated the action. I think the timing is key along with how you rotate the body. I've seen fighters KO guys by throwing hook with thumb to ceiling.
A lot of amateur boxers tend to throw palm face down, thats the way I was taught. You do tend to be able to get more power throwing thumb facing up though.
It depends on a fighter, some fighters throw it like A scenario some like B. I personally throw it in a way that the thumb faces towards me, i get more power like that, i just cant produce power even close to that if i throw it differently. My trainer said its not wrong and that some fighter do it like that some other way, i think Tyson used both ways.
Thumb up, its a more natural motion imo but there's no right or wrong way. This content is protected GIFSoup Bob Foster talked about punching as using the blade of the axe, turning the wrist over as you follow through the point of impact.
I throw it thumb up, or thumb down. Thumb up for mid/close range. Thumb down for long distance/pivoting with momentum. I get more power in throwing it thumb down.
lol exact opposite for me. . . but i get more power with thumb down as well. to each his own. . there is no wrong way as long as the motion in turning the punch over is cyorrect.
I do all three, it depends on the situation, this one can be mistaken for a slap or arm punch if not thrown correctly, it feels great when it does though. I always felt more comfortable with the palm facing towards me, you get more power into it that way, with the palm facing down though its easier to get a goot shot right on the point of the chin. my old boxing gym always told me to do it with the palm facing down, never felt right though neither way is bad for your hands/wrists though, i dont believe
I prefer throwing it palm facing me; there's something about the muscles in my shoulder that just follow through more when I do it that way. I also feel like more of my fist can land at once than if I just clip them with the end of the two knuckles. In close though, I've found it's shorter and more accurate to do it palm facing the floor.
Which ever way works best with your technique So make sure your overall technique is correct Best for me: Rear hook - palm face Lead hook - Palm ground
Same as you guys I seem to get more power with thumb down. That last bit of twist in the wrist before contact just seems to help drum up a little more power and zip. I find I only throw thumb up when I'm get really really heavy tired arms and I feel my my form is slipping.
