thumb up for me .. and seen just as many trainers and pros teach this way too, this question comes up alot and i really dont get the debate the power comes from the feet legs hips and torso your arm is the extension you can still punch "through the target" and get your body weight behind the punch imo with thumbs up this is an extract from Fighting Fit Roy Jones junior " Jones rates his left hook as the best in the business and he throws it with a vertical fist and so doesnt turn his forearm into it. "you push the punch out and pull it across. Thats what makes it so deadly" The mechanics of his hook means he has more control of it and can apply it from different angles" NO in not saying throwing it with the palm to the floor is wrong but neither is it wrong as such to throw it with the thumb facing up. My coach insists we throw it with the thumb up. And hes qualified enough for me
I guess it is up for debate, but I have always thought range (palm down) versus power (palm facing you). Also seems that it increases chance of injury palm down due to the pinky knuckle being on the outside of the shot if the other guy almost gets away. I could be wrong though.
Fi di puuurfect 'ook, yah need to av an imaginary line tru yah body; from head to da floor. Pivot ya fron foot Twist ya body nuh, not leaving dat imaginary line Shift ya weight from ya front to ya back foot rasta Nuh hear me now, use da torque from yah body and ting while keepin yah elbow at a 90 degree angle. Me got taught to keep yah hand facing da floor, but if it is a body shot, well, it up to you rasta. One more ting, it vital to keep your chin behin ya shoulder, so ya cyant get licked nuh. Jah bless.
yopu m ight be able to find lots of videos telling us how to throw perfect left hooks etc but you will struggle to find footage of a boxer doing it technicalkly perfect. as someone else posted all the big left hookers are thumbs up. try searching for someone on youtube who does it technically the correct way. you will struggle.
Ive always thought it obvious, when i see guys throwing thumbs up theyre usually open for a straight down the pipe, it seems to hook thumbs up makes you prone to dropping the glove from the chin to wind it slightly before you throw it and it seems to also stop the shoulder from covering the chin as well during the strike. thrown thumbs down you get cover from shoulder during, the fist wont need to drop from the chin before striking and having missed a thumbs down hook your elbows are more in position as such so you can use the elbow to cover or parry any counter straights or hooks, thumbs up just generally seems a lot more open to counter then thumbs down in every aspect, but that doesnt mean thumbs up doesnt have a place in boxing, however it does mean just because the greats do it doesnt make it safe and/or mean you can pull it off too. stick with palms down unless your thumbs up are knocking em all out. its not worth the risk of throwing that way because the weakness is there to be exploited, leaving it upto your opponents skill and perception as to weather he can expose you or not.. **** that.
sugar shane throws a nasty palm down left hook, he finished margo with them, and the last second ko of mayorga was a palm down, i suppose its different for different fighters!
It's true about the hookers, but better movement in palm down because it flows more during and after the hit but you can deliver a bit more strength with thumbs up. So Naturally the stronger guys will like the thumbs up hook and eventually get tired. Ive been with one coach who said the palm down was the "old way of doing it". :huh
