and avoids the call for another fight versus Dawson, Hopkins or even Pavlik, He has nothing to prove! It is more important to become a statesman in the sport and a legend in his home country than to continue to fight until he is beaten and used up. -Had Ali retired after Foreman or theThrilla in Manila -Had Leonard re-retired after Hagler -Had Holyfield retired after Tyson II they would have enjoyed an even greater place in history than they do now. My hope is that Joe is retired and rises above the noise of "one more fight" to become a successful businessman and promoter with a strong voice and presence in the sport of boxing.
But how could he leave the sport, boxing that well? I thought this as well that he should retire at the top of his game. But he looked so good against Jones (boxing that is)
lol he just beat a guy who couldn't hold dawsons jock....he is #1 p4p right now...but why would any JC fan want him to retire...he beat Bhop and RJJ way out of their primes...let him prove himself vs a young lion...or are u scared...believe me I wish PBF didn't retire
It will be better for the sport if he retires with his legend intact rather than becoming another in a long line of used up fighters. There will always be another Dawson waiting in the wings. Why continue to take them on only to eventually get beat and tarnished. Why be a Hopkins, De LaHoya, Jones. They were great but are now tarnished and continue the long line of fighters who continue to fight too long. Gene Tunney, Rocky Marciano, Ricardo Lopez retired as great. So can Joe Calzaghe. PBF is smart IF he can stay retired which I predict he can't. The lure of money will be too much especially with his spending habits.
I think Calzaghe should retire because there's no one out there for him to prove anything against that he hasn't fought already. I don't care about any fighter's "0", so whether Calzaghe retires unbeaten or not by fighting on and on is immaterial to me. Calzaghe should retire not because he couldn't provide great fights against good fighters; he could! Instead, it's because his heart is not in it anymore and because he cannot motivate himself anymore. In these circumstances, what is the point of him continuing? He should only fight on if he is 100% and if he is hungry to impress and perform. He isn't...so...it's farewell, Calzaghe!!:hi:
I can see that too...if he finds the motivation to carry on, after a nice break and Christmas... ...but who could provide that motivation, who doesn't already?:think Why could win a great fight in the meantime to prove he was good enough for Calzaghe to want to beat him, even for a lot of cash?:think Dawson is rematching Tarver again!:happy :happy :happy What a stunning fight that will be...not...:dead Unless he beats Hopkins or Kessler impressively...Calzaghe won's be interested. Froch is fighting Pascal...a win would hardly make him the man at 168. Kessler? Unless he beats Hopkins or Dawson, it won't happen. Neither fight looks that likely. Only one I can see is Hopkins, if he beats Kessler or Dawson next impressively. But I have my doubts Calzaghe would rematch Hopkins...and that Hopkins would fight Kessler in the first place... ...so...who? Who could provide that motivation, who doesn't already?:think
This thread was true when it was originally posted and it is true now. Hopkins is trying to milk the juice out of the Golden Boy cow while he can to continue to feed his ego. Calzaghe should do what few have done in boxing....stay away, not risk his undefeated status and enjoy the legacy.
It's impossible for Ali to enjoy a "higher place" in the sport than he does. Leonard does not hold a lower place in the sport because he fought on. All the fighters you mentioned are all time greats and got that way by facing great competition. Joe should not be compared to any of these fighters. At this point he does not have an "all time great" legacy to protect. atsch
I don't want to be too hard on Joe, he did accomplish some great things. He was the reigning SMW champ for a long long time, and did take the ring LHW championship. Though his resume at first glance looks great, he is the only man with Eubank, Hopkins, and Jones on his hit list. But it does matter that none of them were at their best when Calzaghe fought them, I can't name one great or hall of fame fighter that was prime when he fought and beat them The 46-0 does not mean that much to me. Especially when you consider Roy Jones without the DQ in a fight he was going to win, would have been 50-0, with titles from MW to HW. I think Calzaghe was a great fighter, but the 0 means he did not take that many risks when it mattered, because he really didn't. Though you can't blame Joe, for everything that happened in his career, more so his promoter early on. I still think he is a great fighter, H2H would give anyone a good fight at 168 including Jones. I have lots of respect for him, and consider him an all time great.
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2788004/joe_calzaghe_road_to_respect.html?cat=14 The link above is an article about how Joe Calzaghe had long road to get respect as a pro boxer. I hope he does stay retired. He defeated everyman he ever faced. His legacy is already in place.
Oh boy. Did you write that? Because that read like it taken right off the pages of esb. Most non UK fans don't view him as all that. What does that tell you? Subjective rooting interest maybe?
