Why isn't boxing as popular as it was in the 80s and prior years ? Why are talented athletes not getting into boxing as much ? Many reasons can explain these circumstances but I've always felt that the most important was the lack of wide spread coverage, especially in the last 10 years ! No single cable station can come close to the exposure given by the terrestrial stations . The CBS portion of the SHOWTIME deal for Pacquiao-Mosley, will allow approximately 115 000 000 homes in the US to view the lead up hype towards the fight, instead of the usual 30 000 000 or so homes that HBO brings to the table. The more the sport is in people's face, the more it will rekindle their interest. Like for many things in life, it's a matter of numbers. Boxing also needs to be brought back on daytime TV during the weekends , such as what ABC was doing in the 80s... I also like Don King's idea of giving fans the opportunity to watch live fights from the web. That idea needs to be developed further but I would keep that option free for all fights except for the major PPV events involving boxing's superstars. Again, the more exposure given to boxing, the more interest will develop among fans and also future athletes. Main stream terrestrial TV stations allow that to happen. It's a major step in the right direction !!!
From 30 to 115 is amazing. Could Pac Mosley make like 2 mil buys ? If it does then imagine Pac Mayweather with the same coverage.
Slim chance it exceeds the Cotto-Pacquiao numbers but the exposure is great for boxing. Now they'll have to deliver great performances to match the interest.
This has been done before and recently....sheesh you people are not informed. And just because Pac gets a deal doesn't mean CBS is going to cover boxing with any consistency. It will just cover Pacman.....in the same way Los Angeles Times only covered boxing if the article was either DLH, Tyson or Holyfield. Try and find them covering it now outside of Pacman.
