Many posters are saying that the upcoming fight between Hopkins and Pavlik is a lose/lose scenario for Pavlik because he is fighting a fighter who's 43 years old but this can potentially be a lose/lose situation for Hopkins also, obviously because there's a great chance that he might get another loss on his resume but if Hopkins were to win this fight will fans discredit the win because Pavlik is moving up in weight to fight Hopkins?....When critics discredit Hopkins resume they often say that he fought fighters who had just moved up in weight like Trinidad,Oscar,Winky. So if Hopkins were to win would people discredit the win because it's Pavlik that's moving up in weight?

If Hopkins won this it would be one of the better wins of his career.

Hopkins is in a definite win situation.

He has people believing he still hasn't lost to Taylor or Calzaghe, if he beats Pavlik and does it convincingly, he basically says "I beat the guy who everyone says beat me" and writes that part of history off.

    Pavlik is in the lose/lose.

If anything Pavlik is in the lose/lose situation. Although I do believe he wanted this fight with the intention of baiting Calzaghe, so that could be a positive.

I agree that Pavlik is more in the lose/lose. But you been around ESB and other boxing forums to know how fickle fans can be, and if Hopkins does win convincingly fans would attribute it to something because he is 43 years old.

Meh, who gives a **** what internet fans think.

Internet fans try and paint Joe Calzaghe as some euro bum who will only fight past their prime fighters, despite him beating pretty much everyone his division had to offer.

Nah, once you're past 40 you can't lose, you can only make more money.

I dont think so. At 43 hopkins is a total win/win. if he does win its obvious...if he loses, he still gets respect for going in at 43

its a lose/lose the other way (kelly)

Win/Win because he shouldnt even be fighting still and nobody believes he can win.

If he wins great for him

If he loses he was old, shot, and wouldve schooled him in his prime

Definitely win/win. The fight's at 170 which is nothing for the tallish pavlik whom has stated he feels strong at 170 rather than cutting significantly to 160. Even if hop loses but makes it a fight there's probably still another money fight out there (rjj - assuming he doesn't get clowned by calzaghe) and hop's legacy (whatever it is) won't suffer much because of his age (compared to pavlik).

nah, if hopkins wins he will get an insane amount of credit for it.

Pavlic is a big guy.. The second Taylor fight was at 168 too remember and he looked good there. Hops isnt really "bigger" than him. Hes been at 170 for calzaghe and winky. So they are basically at the same weights, its no big deal.

This is not a lose/lose situation for either guy. When guys are willing to fight each other no matter what, its a win/win for boxing fans and the boxing world. Too many times people think about legacies and reputations, and all that. When we should be thinking and being thankful for great fighters being men, and making great fights happen, witnessing them, and then discussing them. That's what makes sports and boxing fun. I will not take anything away from either guy.

The way that things have been for Hopkins with the fans, if he beats Pavlik they'll mentally sweep it under the rug, and forget it ever happened as soon as it's over. Hopkins seems to get virtually no credit at all for taking dangerous fights, or even winning them, when he pulls out the victories.
