Hopkins always said he takes away his opponents' best weapon. What is Calzaghe's?

I didn't say Hopkins would ko Calzaghe, only that when you're talking about top fighters, anything is possible.

To me , Calzaghes success is mysterious. He seems wide open, swinging away with his hands down. There doesn't seem to be much leverage behind his punches, and at times looks downright awkward. But looking at the frustrated faces of his opponents not to mention an unbeaten streak and 20 title defenses tells me theres something I'm missing. Benards great at shutting down more conventional styles, but when these guys climb into the ring, who'll shut down who?

Considering that Calzaghe probably has more variety to his game, my guess is that Hopkins' would have a serious task on his hands if he wants to shut him down.

Calzaghe is just too good. One day the rest of the world will realize it.

    Exactly!

How did Hatton get knocked down? He was caught flush while coming in. If PBF hits Hatton with the same shot without him lunging in, there is not nearly as much power in the punch.

If Hopkins catches Calzaghe coming in flush, why is it so out of the question for some of you that he can hurt Calzaghe? Hopkins doesn't jump in and out of spots so he won't be nearly as exposed. He's more calculating. Calzaghe is more reckless at times. And Hopkins is a guy who can capitalize on mistakes.

If there's one thing Joe's good at, it's taking right-hand bombs. The guy eats them for breakfast and comes back for desert.

Not to make this discussion about PBF, but PLEASE! That fight was freakin horrible. You had Hatton with a high work rate, trying to rough Floyd up, and then you got Floyd clinching every 10-15 seconds. Hatton was so damn tired from trying to rough floyd up, and Floyd clinches that PBF could have blown on him, and he'd have fell over. Of course Floyd won, but that was a dirty fight IMO.
Back to Joe, and Hopkins though. Joe isn't that stupid, or inexperienced to let Hopkins do that kind of style to him. Joe also keeps in shape...Where Hatton let's himself go (getting up to almost 180 wasn't it?) and then training like hell for the fight. Hatton is a brawler, Joe is just a phenomenal boxer. No comparison.
Hopkins stands a chance, he's one of the greats in boxing, but my money is on Joe. Just don't see him beating him unless a miracle happens.

Is punch out rate per round and is stanima is phenominal and thats at weight were he struggled to get down to. So he could be more amazing at 175.

Great counterpunching isn't about a certain style. It's about boxing skill.

IMO team calzaghe`s game plan for the first 4 to 5 rounds or so is going to be
in and out jab/jab/jab /jab occasinal straight left and out and try and beat hopkins to the jab with speed of punch and speed of feet and not engage.

see if this works, if it does stick to it for the fight.

against kessler calzaghe threw something like 500 or 600 jabs alone.

this stratergy will negate all the traps and spoiling tatics that hopkins will want to employ, and might make the fight boring , but it will be the right stratergy and will not allow hopkins to tie up/maul/headbutt/shoulder charge/

which ocelot spelt out correctly is what hopkins will want to do.

it will also allow calzaghe to see counters coming and step off around the side or under , which when calzaghe has a defensive mindset on , is the best offensive fighter in the world at slipping and countering.

not following this gameplan gives hopkins a good chance to win IMO.

sean, good post as usual. But you and me both know that if Joe is able to jab and move at will, there will be a point where he will try and stop Hopkins. The entertainer in Joe always wants that little bit more, wanting to put on a show. Let's say that JC is on top as mentioned after 8 rounds and decides that he wants to move in for the kill, what do you see happening?

Mate, the only chance Hopkins has a shot if he counter punches Calzaghe, if Calzaghe is playing the counter puncher in this fight Hopkins is going to get abused and badly.

Hopkins should try to take away Calzaghe's Jab. If he can stop that he will be able to hit Calzaghe a bit more without getting counterd to buggery as much.

People don't realize that Joe is an epileptic and that he has seizures that make him slap and move spastically....
