' I have never met bernard,,I read that interview and all I read is crap about hopkins.. His last line, that the kid beat cancer it didnt beat him..Cancer killed that kid. I am not judging hop by the media. Hop is a certified criminal. Someone is a criminal and does a good act once they have money and they are a hero? Give me a ****ing break. If someone robs or deals drugs or rapes or kills or whatever, even if it was 30 years ago they still have the responsibility for those actions. Its like saying a person who molested a child 30 years ago then helps someone is now a good person. You people have no idea how many or how badly bernard hurt people b4 or during his time in prison. if Bhop is the best role model you people or that kid can come up with then this world and your idea of a role model are skewed to hell and back.
Apparently, neither do you as you're pinning crimes on him that he didn't even commit. According to you, everyone that commits a crime should be put in jail for life seeing as how you don't think they can be rehabilitated.
Yeah, I read this article. A sad story and that kid was amazing. Seeing how week he was and could only stay awake at 10-15 minutes at a time by the time the Hopkins-Pavlik fight rolled around and then fights to stay awake the whole fight to see hsi friend fight.
Im not sure what all felonies nard committed..I know its was more than a few. I;ve never seen his rap sheet. your making some huge inferences from my post which u seem to think will support your argument that Nard is a good person. People can be rehabilitated and people can turn their lives around. But, that doesnt detract from what you have done in the past. You seem to not beleive in personal responsilbity. These things have been done. Peoples lives have been affected, negatively. I stand by what I said, if you cannot find a better Role Model than bernard hopkins you are a sad sad excuse for a person.
Then don't you think it's fair to say that you don't know what you're talking about in terms of Hopkins as a person? Maybe I'm wrong here, but from your posts you seem to be implying that ex-cons can't turn their lives around and become good citizens. The guy went to jail, he's already done his time. Since coming out of jail, he's kept his nose clean, he's done a lot of good work for his community and he has even gone back to the jail where he was incarcerated in order to talk to the inmates there. What else do you want him to do? You have no idea about what he did to go to prison, why he did it, or whom he did it to. You also don't seem to have much knowledge as to how he's conducted himself and lived his life since being released from prison. Hopkins is not the best role model, but he's a good role model. If you're a kid who's in trouble, has been in trouble, or is in a tough situation, Hopkins is a good person to inspire to keep perservering. Guys who grew up like Hopkins and go to jail at an early age usually end up dead or incarerated by the time they are Hopkins' age. The fact that he's alive, thriving in life, and hasn't been in any trouble since coming out of jail is amazing. I actually feel that you might be a sad excuse for a person given the fact that feel the need to hate on a man that you know very little about and who has turned his life around and done some great things for his community and his fans. It doesn't erase the bad things he's done, but then again, nothing will
If your a person that is so great then stop with the racial remarks..move on as a person. I stand by what I said..even if you are an inner city kid..there are better role models and there is religion to turn to instead of violence and hatred. Even among boxers there are a ton of good role models..Bhop would not be on my list.
I disagree. I think you can be a good person today regardless if you robbed someone over 20 years ago. Actions speak louder than words. Here is an example of something Hopkins did on his own time, away from the cameras and media. He didnt have to do this, he did this for this kid because he wanted to. Have you ever considered that many of the fighters talk **** and put on an act to hype up fights? This was discussed just yesterday by a major boxer on the On the Grind Radio show. That many times they will talk **** prefight and that is just to hype themselves up and hype up the fight. The same two guys who are talking **** pre fight can be great friends post fight. It seems you dont have much knowledge of boxing or of Bernard Hopkin's history. James Toney says all kinds of controversial things when he is in the spotlight but I have read from countless sources saying that he is a nice down to earth guy in person. Actions speak louder than words. If Hopkins says something racist that he doesnt really believe in at heart to hype a fight, but in his spare time, when the cameras arent around, takes his time to visit a kid who is dying of cancer, I would say overall he is a good person.
Again, I guess words speak louder than actions. Hopkins would probably get more props from you for being politically correct, and then blowing off this kid. Don't ever become a counselor for troubled kids. Kids need someone they can indentify with. If I'm a kid and I'm in always in trouble, a guy like Hopkins(who's been in my shoes), is better role model then an ancient book filled with fairy tales. But you don't even know much about Hopkins.
Well this wasnt away from the media now was it? Also, hyping fights by making racial slurs agianst white people ala Mike tyson is low class behavior, not role model behavior. And it doesnt seem anyone knows exactly what all of Bhops felonies are..especially you people who keep posting that you know him so well. So all you great personal friends of hopkins, post me a list of his 9 felonies and gang activity.
It was away from the media. The story was picked up by one writer for yahoo after the fight happened. Hopkins is a huge star, contracts with goldenboy and HBO. If he really wanted attention to this, he could easily have this story blasted all over HBO. He didnt. You are talking about something that happened over 20 years ago. I admit that he was a bad human being 20 years ago. Hopkins would admit that as well. However you seem to think that people cant change and going from an unknown convict to one of the greatest middleweights of all time is a huge achievement. Also I think you need to re-evaluate the idea that his criminal record makes him a poor role model. He is someone who came from nothing, made mistakes and changed his life around. That is more likely to reach people in poverty and people currently in prison. Who is a better role model for them, someone who came from where they are today and made something from himself, or someone who was born into a wealthy and successful family? I find your idea that nobody can change their life around to be extremely pessimistic. Is it not better for a convict to do something positive with their life and change? If you really believe once a criminal always a bad person, then what incentive would there be for everyone who has ever commited a crime to change? Your viewpoint is saying that since anyone who has commited a crime or been in a gang will forever be a bad person, then there is no incentive for them to change and attempt legit work. You are saying it would make no difference if they would continue with their criminal activity. You are saying that Hopkins might as well have returned to committing crimes and hurting more people because becoming one of the greatest fighters of all time and 20 years removed from crimes is no accomplishment. That is extremely cynical.
I admited that people change in an above thread, but that doesnt undo what you did in the past. Your examples above are both extremes. There are people who coem from bad roots and achieve great things in their lives without resorting to a life of crime. I hate to break this to you guys since you are all "experts" on Bernard Hopkins, but from what i have read, Bhop comes from a middle class family and actually lived in a desirable upper/middle class area of Philly:hi:
You are gifted in worldly matters. Should have hanged him as a youth or at best never let him out of prison, eh?
