It's worth noting that Calzaghe's best opponent to date was a past it chris eubank, hopkins best opponent was a peak or close to it roy jones. hopkins has been in with far better comp than calzaghe so the undefeated record means nothing. Calzaghe's comp overall is pretty weak. There are people who take the " us of a is d'bomb shiznit" illiterate bollocks line of reasoning but in reality hopkinsis well within his rights to criticise calzaghe's comp

For the most part his best possible matchups weren't in Europe, and he was a far bigger draw in the US than any of those guys were in their own country on top of being ranked P4P #1 and for damn good reason. Who would he have had to fight to no longer be considered "overprotected" in your mind, or is it just the fact that he never fought in Europe that gave you this idea?
