the racist taunts were definitely to sell tickets man. remember before the kelly fight how he became friends with that terminally ill kid he had driving and even crashing his bentley? the man is not a racist, but he is a great self promoter

Times change dude. White people used to laugh at white actors in blackface not so long ago. Not any more and for good reason. Barack Obama, a black guy is president, the attorney general, Holder is black, etc. Black people calling white grown adult men "white boy" is no longer acceptable. Think about it for a second. What proud, self respecting African American citizen would call a fellow Caucasian American citizen a "white boy"? This kind of racial taunt is no longer acceptable and Hopkins should have apologized for that outburst. A white fighter who made a similar racist remark would have been crucified.

I would've given $10 to see one of the announcers ask the question "You said you'd never let a white boy beat you....how about letting a white boy meat you?" in the post fight interview.

Exactly. Borenard should hang his head in shame for making racist comments even if it was just to sell tickets. hardly a good example to set when so many young impressionable people look up to him as a role model

Hopkins did what he had to do to stay competative. I had JC winning by 2 rounds when I watched it live and 3-4 rounds when I watch it now. Okay, fair enough, if Cortez had done his job properly then I'm sure we'd have seen some points deducted, but I doubt it would have forced Hopkins out of his defensive shell, he was against a guy who for every 1 of his good shots would throw 10 back.
I'm no Hopkins fan, I'm also white and not once was I offended, he's a typically brash and immature boxer, but his personality sells fights love him or hate him.

Thats not the point though is it?

A black man was allowed to make derogortary comments about his opponent based on his race, whereas a white man doing the same against a black man would have been crucified by media- and if said in England could possibly face criminal charges. You can't be oversensitve for one person doing it then decry the other as a racist if he'dve done it.

I just dont find it very offensive is all.

Big deal, he said he wouldnt loose to a 'white boy'. Who cares. If he really is racist, i dont care. (Definatly don't think he is though, he said it just to sell tickets)

Are people just complaining cause a black man can say that stuff like that and white guys can't? Just upset that there is double standards for this stuff?

If there is double standards, thats pretty explainable. Its not too long ago that black people were treated like second class citizens based on their race, and people used racist comments to keep them down.

I dont think Minter faced any criminal charges.

To be honest I'm alot more thick skinned than getting offended at what he said, but the fact is he is using racism to sell tickets, should that be acceptable?

It is double standards, but no it is not explainable. We are supposed to have progressed since the days of n****r's and apartheid, but if all that has happened is the previously abused group are now the ones doing the abusing then we haven't moved on at all. It's just one group being racist to another.

I'm not talking about the past, I'm talking about modern England where whites have to be careful about what they say incase they done for inciting racial hatred. and yes, Minter was wrong with what he said and shouldn't have done it.

We had an exchange over this issue BEFORE the fight.

One of my big beefs since the early 90's has been the notion of political correctness.

I have no problem whatsoever with what Bernard said. It was purely a hype move, designed to sell tickets. Part of a tradition going back to Jack Johnson and all the way through to Holmes-Cooney.

Some folks just need to loosen up their anal sphincters a little.

Banter like this goes on all the time. Hopkins has Black AND White partners, and while he probably holds one or two regrettable views on race, so do we all, including 99 % of the white posters on here.

I use the N word occasionally, mostly in a Tarantino-esque fashion, and I don't much give a **** if some find it offensive. I'm quite secure in my own mind that I'm not racist.

That doesn't mean I don't believe there are racial differences. According to the gospel of Political Corectness, we aren't supposed to even notice such differences, much less comment on them.

The average Black American is taller than the average Filipino. So what ?

Some poor American sports commentator got sacked for pointing out that Blacks seem to be over-represented in major American sports leagues (except for Ice Hockey).

    WTF !!!

I'm a fan of Hops, mostly for his boxing, but there are things I don't like about the dude. His lack of grace in a decisive defeat, for example. He won two to four rounds of the Calzaghe fight. Three would be a fair compromise.

But I have no problem with his pre-fight remarks.

It'll be funny if he says: "I'll never lose to ANOTHER white boy" prior to fighting Adamak. Funny because he will almost certainly lose.

I would like to see him close out a great career by defeating Froch. This fight is winnable and would

    a) Give him a victory over an undefeateted fighter.
    b) Give him a title in a third weight class
    c) Give him indirect and vicarious revenge over Jermain (for the SECOND time)

and finally, allow him to finish out his career by beating a white boy ! :yep
