I'd done a thread on him beforehand so I'd watched all of the available footage on him, and based on his high guard hook happy style I knew he'd be a nightmare for Fonfara whose Achilles heel tends to be looping overhands as opposed to straight shots. Add to that he beat Will Rosinsky, who isn't an easy opponent to beat, he was arguably robbed against Edwin, I forgot my score for that match but it was far closer than the official lopsided scores. And according to people he beat Will whose really hard to KO, even Pavlik couldn't, with relative ease, so that proved he could hang with a guy like Fonfara, who I don't rate exceptionally high. B-Hop I think is hoping the same thing you were initially feeling is the case, but if he's rusty, which he will be Joe will be dangerous and early.
I think Smith would fight more cautiously in the rematch to avoid getting slightly hurt, he was too aggressive, and still he get the KO win, Smith like I said before is just Fonfara's kryptonite style wise, I like Andrzej, but his defense is **** and if Clev had any power he would have probably KO'd him as well. If B-Hop can train like a beast for the next two months and come in with zero ring rust and be ready for a guy who brings serious pressure, then maybe he can pull off one last win, but I have a hard time seeing it. Too long a layoff at this age, at least he'd fought 6 months before the Kovalev match, and I think the Kovalev match probably did more damage than he's letting on.
Smith will get countered all night long. Joe ain't stopping the alien! Bernard is ancient but he's a freak. And he knows how to slow the fight down to a snails pace. Fonfara is a decent fighter but his chin is terrible, Stevenson the one trick pony couldn't put him out of there because he has one weapon and atrocious stamina.
Smith would be wise to bumrush Hopkins, and try to maul him. Keep the pressure on him all fight. Hopkins is old, frail, slow of hand and footspeed, unathletic, stiff, doesn't have the strength he used to in the clinch, and can't fight a hard 12 rounds. If Smith lets Hopkins control the distance and throw his one punch at a time, Hopkins will go 12 rounds easy. If Smith gets in there and roughs him up, showing disdain for Hops perceived lack of power, he will have a good chance to beat the Alien. Hopkins best punch at this juncture of his career is the right hand from a mid distance. On the inside, his punches are basically all pity pat though. Smith should make it a brawl on the inside. Fight him in a phone booth, and make him work... prove that he can handle the pressure of a young guy.
Frankly, I don't care. Hopkins fights have always been like watching paint dry. Boring and dirty. Always hitting on the hip opposite the ref. People want to make him out to be so much better than he was. Yeah, I know his record. Just boring as hell.
No, but what you said (Hopkins a top 5 ATG p4p) is pretty farfetched to be honest. Who do you have above / below him? He's an ATG for sure, but I'd put the following above him without hesitation: Ali, Louis, SRR, Greb, Armstrong, Willie Pep ... honestly can't see how Hopkins has half a hope of displacing any of the above.
Pascal x2, Taylor x2, Pavlik, Murat, Tarver, Trinidad: Those were not boring fights. It´s only a few but he has had his moments.
...before that Fonfara KO, though, Smith had done exactly nothing. One good result doesn't mean you might kayo B-Hop... even a 50-something post-Kovalev version.
No it doesn't, but we have to factor in the fact he's been inactive for 2 years and is now 51 years old. That has to be taken into account here IB.
In theory you may be right.... but also it could also turn out to be B-Hop's Grover Wiley moment. God forbid. Although that comparison is kind of an huge insult to poor Joe.
