:good Add the altitude to the thousands of fans throwing **** into the ring during rounds, screaming that they would kill Hopkins if he won, the armed soldiers TRYING (and failing) to keep peace, etc. There are VERY few instances in recent memory that were tougher to fight in than this one (Holt - Torres immediately pops into mind). The fact that these are the ONLY two KDs of his career tells you something about the fight and the fighter.
Yeah I remember. Hopkins ko'd him in the rematch though. Hopkins has never been stopped. Even James Toney has been down three times in his career.
I used to be a huge fan until I saw that video. What china chin, hes even worse than Wlad. Theres no way i'm supporting him after watching that video. He's a hypejob, and won't turn out to be anyone good. Probably going to get knocked out completely in his next fight.
Jesus Christ! Vlad does not have a china chin for God's sake! That is simply a myth. If you knew what I know, then you would know better, but no sense in telling somebody who has been brainwashed by US Boxing media. Hopkins does not have a china china chin either, never underrestimate Hopkins, but never underrestimate Calzaghe either. They both have good chins. "If" Hopkins were to go down vs. Calzaghe, it would not be because of his chin, but because of Calzaghe's fast hands and highly underrated power.
You saw how those knockdowns happened though.. Had Hopkins leaning in, eyes facing his toes, looking to clinch.. Mercado stepped back and unleashed into Hopkins sloppyness. That is so atypical of Hopkins.. Last guy you would expect to see that sort of thing from in the ring.
Hopkins should have won that fight because he also scored 2 knockdowns on Mercado - a right hand that didn't land clean on the side of his head but dropped him to one knee in round three and connected later in the sixth with a counter right hook and a left that had Mercado held by the ropes. Bernard had Mercado on the defensive and taking leather during all the fight long, exception for that fifth round when he was hurt by a right hook and knocked out of balance and took a 10 second pounding to end the fifth, and in the seventh when he came forward, was closing down Mercado and took another short right uppercut and was pushed-dropped by a left hook... That is perfectly comparable to Joe being dropped by Mitchell's right hook and by Salem's counter right in the fourth. Hopkins dropped twice more than a decade ago, never cut in his career and would take more than 10 years and 20 title fights - 1993 till 2004 - to lose another fight again... BTW, Hopkins was dropped by Antwun Echols in their first fight ( first round) during a break but Kid Dynamite Echols had 22 KOs in 22 wins.
Not true, he was clearly hurt both times by right uppercuts. It took him a while to fall and for the 2nd knockdown he was pushed..but he still badly hurt and his legs were gone.
Ha Ha he got dropped twice and ended up with a draw in Mercado's hometown. SAYS ALOT ABOUT MERCADO !!
Did B-hop beat that guy? 1-0-1 isn't too bad against a guy. He didn't lose to Mercado, he just got knocked down.
Hopkins was pushed down twice, once with a right hook and once with a right uppercut. What was that ref doing?!
