He came to prominence and started his 'historic' run of alphabet world title defences at 160 after the acknowledged top boys of the division, Roy Jones and Gerald McClellan, had moved to 168. Purely coincidence? To say the division he took over was average would be an understatement. His pick of wins at 160 undoubtedly came against Felix Trinidad. Trinidad is one of my all-time favourites, but it's safe to say he became a first ballot Hall-of-famer for his achievements at 147 and 154, not middleweight. Certain people still portray that win at the level of Ali vs Foreman. Hopkins then lost the titles and failed to regain them against Jermain Taylor. It's inconceivable that Taylor would own two wins, disputed or not, against any other 'great' fighter in the history of the 154 pound division, let alone 160. His most celebrated wins since leaving the division are against Tarver, Pavlik and Pascal. He was underdog in all three, and they are good wins, even if you acknowledge that Tarver had blown up to 215 pounds to record a 'Rocky' film months previously and that Pavlik was battling an alcohol addiction. The rolling around on the floor against Joe Calzaghe and convenient shoulder injury against Chad Dawson weren't exactly warrior like either. He lost to Calzaghe, as he did when he eventually fought Chad Dawson to a natural conclusion. Hopkins is able to win against certain guys at 175 as he approaches 50 because they're mediocre nonentities who are intimidated by him. Kovalev is neither, and i will enjoy seeing him put one of the most over rated, fawned over fighters of the modern era firmly into retirement.
Not enough... them damn odds stuck at 2/5 for Kovalev. Why couldn't they hype him up like they did Cleverly, to get almost even odds?
How many fighters don't look overrated when you subject their resume to this kind of point-by-point scrutiny? Once you start with the premise that they are overrated you can make all sorts of subjective judgements about the level their opponents were at to justify this premise. Most probably plenty of people here could do the exact same to a fighter you think is great, and better than Hopkins.
In from 4-11 though, with a ground swell of people within the sport now saying they fancy his chances. Could get 4-7 by fight night.
- a record 20 defenses as middleweight champ including wins over holmes, tito, odlh, eastman and every other elite middleweight of the era. - disputed losses to olympic bronze medalist taylor (how many olmypic medals did kovalev win? oh, that's right...NONE) who went on to successfully defend against pfp entrants of the day winky wright, cory spinks...taylor in his prime had atg potential...just not the dedication he needed. -wins over pfp elites winky wrght and antonio tarver. - another close, controversial loss to calzaghe in a fight many thought he deserved to win...and calzaghe is considered by many an atg. -convincing wins over pascal, cloud, shumenov...all lhwweight champions. nothing overrated about hopkins record... kovalev on the other hand would be one of the LEAST accomplished (if most overhyped) champs (both amateur and professional ) that hopkins will have defeated.
HGHopkins is only around this long because of his inactive, dirty cheating style and the fact that he uses anti aging hormones.
Antonio Tarver retrospectively rated as 'pound for pound elite' when Hopkins beat him is typical of the lack of judgement and objective opinions people have on Hopkins these days.
He said he can't retire because he can still at his age beat half these guys, which is true. People say Tyson was overrated but can't take away that he was youngest hw champion. Hopkins is a legend similarly though on the other end of the spectrum, whether you like it or not.
Its very clear that you're Jealous and envious Hopkins. Do mind telling you athletic record. You're probably too fat to wipe your own ass.
