    Rubbish!

There are PLENTY of first class white boxers and there have been for ever. Unless Hopkins thinks he is SRR, he cannot assume some of those white boxers couldn't beat him. How many great black swimmers were there/are there? Name me 10-20 names...

Hopkins comment was racist because it implied that a black man was inherently superior to a white man as a fighter.

Wouldn't it be racist if a white Professor of Physics in a University would say: "I'm never going to let a black boy take the Nobel Prize for Physics from me!"? - referring to a fellow competing black physicist at another top university?

Of course it would. Let's drop it though, Reg; it was obviously racist...no point in arguing 2 + 2 doesn't add up to 4.

His comment in my mind was more that of a promotor and opportunist than a racist, mostly to stir up the hornets nest. I don't respect him for sinking that low though, and I heard worse racist remarks @ my last family reunion.

You're clearly missing the point. It doesn't matter about how many first class boxers there were or presently are. It's all about preception. If you grow up seeing nothing but black people box, it's easy to see how you would assume that blacks are better boxers than white people. Once again, he built up a prejudice. I don't agree with it, but that's what happened

No he didn't. The fact that he said it was a social commentary proves this.

Not necessarily. It would depend on how he qualified the statement.

No, it's not obviously racist. The only thing that is obvious, is your inability to distinguish between racism, and prejudice.

Defend him and kid yourself all you want, Reg; Hopkins is a well-known student of the sport and of its history; he hasn't just come out of the ghetto. In other words, he cannot get away with being prejudiced. His prejudice is based on racism, unlike that of Nazi kids who have been brainwashed to believe that the Aryan race was superior. They didn't know any better and neither might he have known any better, when he came out of prison, but sure as hell he does now, many years after, rubbing shoulders with the great and the good, far, far away from the ghetto! :hi:

If it's not racist, there's no need to mention race...If some white guy said he wouldn't wanna lose to an Asian,..you may not feel that way...it wasn't your race mentioned..Has Joe ever mentioned race when making comment about someone?? If it wasn't racist, the race would not/ SHOULD not be mentioned By the way..BOY is not what Hopkins would wanna be called either...he should have said white MAN...lance, I'm seeing something in you I didn't know about

Hey Reg, the more u try 2 explain it away? The faster u sink, its like quicksand.

Bottom line? Hopkins used another inflammatory remark to set a tone. Its not different than the PR flag or slapping Winky.

Who hasnt experienced racism?:huh All I can say is I dont like what he said but understand why he said it. He hasnt carried himself that way his whole career, so **** it, it is what it is.

Do yourself a favor and stop taking it 2 deep. I wont call u a racist but defending Rev. Wright is ******ed. You're just trying to defend a thread, right?

Racism sux from every angle. Be above it, not defending it!

Not only does that not explain his racism - he has learned a lot since he became a star and he is a student of the game and of its history - but it doesn't excuse it either - does it excuse what the Germans did to the Jews that they were brainwashed?

Not only does he KNOW better, but falling back on his roots to justify his blatant racism is an insult to his "brothers" in the ghetto who DON'T know any better and who HAVEN'T had the opportunities to see a different side of life, that he has been blessed with, because of his talents.

Sadly, you have very little idea of what you're talking about in this situation. You're mixing up your terminology, you're making assumptions that you're not in a postion to accurately make, and you're throwing out words that you don't seem to know the meaning of. Worse yet, you keep throwing out these pathetic comparisons to Nazis. That fact that you try to compare Nazi ideology to Hopkins is sad. It's comletely dissrespectful, and is insulting to victims of the Holocust.

Racism is quicksand:yep Hopkins is inflamatory in nearly every major fight, this time he chose the race card to get under Cal's skin and its worked. Is it really any different than what he did with the PR flag?
    I think not.

I like you, I like Hop's, I like Joe and I cant make a mountain of a mole hill. Dont worry mate, if Calzaghe performs well enough? He can make Hopkins the fool:good

Find me one post where I defended racism. Find one. Most of you people don't even know what the hell racism is. As far as Rev. Wright goes, I said I'm not a fan of his. However, many statements that he has been criticised for weren't even racist. Saying that a non racist statement is not racist is not defending racism.
