This is what anyone who picked Hopkins to lose by KO should have read before the fight with Pavlik !:good
massive style advantage? man hopkins is a bettter fighter period. what r u talking about undersized? calzaghe, wright pavlik are not small fighters. and as far as dlh and trinidad is conncerned, hey, alot of great middlewieghts fought. didnt hagler fight welterwights, , srl, duran and hearns. didnt monzon fight wetlerwights, griffith, naples etc. sometimes your best competion might be in a different wieght class. hopkins is not the best fighter ever, so some people may be going overboard but the man is one of a kind. you wait to see another 43 year old man be as competitve as hopkins. now when it comes to greb, halger, ronbinson, monzon and fitzsimmons, hopkins maybe behind all of them but head 2 head, none of them would have an easy time with him. the man is that competitive.
I repeat: - Pavlik was very good in beating Jermain Taylor at 166. This fight was a massive 4lbs north of that.
pavlik was a big middleweight anyway. and some of you look at 3 or 4 pounds and make a big deal. what about the days when they didnt have all these wieght classs. they didnt make a big deal about it. when you better then another man, you better regardless of wieght. hopkins
Some overhype him, you are to harsh. When your average general forum poster would write he ranks above Hagler or Monzon you would be right but when a respected guy like janitor who normaly gives the edge to old-timers thinks Hopkins ranks above them and that Hopkins is the greatest mw after WW2 than I think there“s something in it. For me Hopkins is an atg, not an elite atg like Robinson or Greb but an atg.
I did consider his age, but when one person makes a covincing case as to how it's relevant, maybe I'll change my stance. The fact is that Hopkins is not an average 44 year old fighter. He hasn't aged like the vast majority of boxers do. Does Mike Tyson deserve to be ranked nowhere, because he was shot before his mid-20's? If you want to give fighters more praise because they overcame something, where should we rank fighters who fought with one lung and other huge problems. Or even guys like Joe Frazier who fought with a long list of medical complaints throughout their best years? It's impressive, sure, but you have to put it into perspective. He didn't look anywhere near as good at 166lbs, as he did at 160. You must admit that. Paul Williams is taller than Jack Dempsey. The point is that height is only part of the equation.
- Joe Calzaghe was an undersized opponent?! You are very confused. Hopkins fought the vast majority of his career at 160lbs. Calzaghe fought the vast majority of his career at 168lbs.
Actually, while Winky was favored, it was only slightly. But still, you can't deny what Hopkins did to Winky. Winky went from being one of the P4P kings and hottest stars in boxing to ending up on a milk carton and missing after fighting Hopkins. Just as Hopkins predicted he would.
I know. I think he said it on the press conference but he also said it on the HBO Countdown show and said it to some young kids at his own neighborhood. He said soemthing like, "Winky got a great jab and defense. We all respect that. But after July 21st, Winky's gonna end up on the nearest milk carton." St. Bernard the prophet.
wink, tito, Joe C were not undersized...they were huge favorites just like KP and he destroyed 2 of them ...he also beat a big mw in glen johnson who has wins over tarver and RJJ and arguably dawson...he absolutely is in monzons class ...head to head he would give any mw ever trouble...and for **** sakes BHOP is NOT overrated ...u need to get a grip
