Had they made that fight with Adamek, I'd actually have favored Hopkins going into it. With Dawson now, not really. I think Dawson's young legs and the new distance dictation he brought out for the Johnson rematch make me think he'd be a terrible match-up for Hopkins.
Hopkins/Adamek is really a toss up for me, would be a very interesting fight. Adamek is by no means a Pavlik, the guy is a vicious consistent body puncher, and keeps getting better everytime I see him. I think Adamek is done below 200 lbs though, its just not official. Yes, Dawson might be a favorite against Hopkins if the fight was to be made. I wouldn't rule the old man out though, he can drag anyone down to his level. Could be as ugly as the Calzaghe fight and while Chad is improving he doesn't quite have Joe's ring IQ just yet.
I agree completely. I have to admire Adamek's sticking to his guns at heavyweight. Lining up two fights with some solid guys. I know it's probably just for HW money but he is testing himself, not just trying to ballyhoo his way into a title fight for a big payday. It's a breath of fresh air to me. But it doesn't look like he's thinking much about CW anymore. Must be confident about his chances.
I think you'll find the only ***** is yourself, Hopkins was retired and Calzaghe called him out for his LHW belts, yet he was supposed to fight Joe at 168 Calzaghe had been tight at 168 and talking about going up in weight for at least 5years and had fights planned in 03/05 against Gonzalez/Johnson that didnt come off. Hopkins was the LHW king, why would he go down in weight against Calzaghe/Winky. Winky was smaller but Winky was the rightful MW champ who deserved the decision over Taylor. Pavlik was moving up to 175 to chase Calzaghe who didnt want to fight him, beating Hopkins was supposed to set up or force a Calzaghe super-fight, yet Hopkins is meant to come down in weight? Your points are below ******ed, you don't have a clue about boxing politics or the business side of things so I won't bother explaining, it'd go over your head Hopkins going after Jones is very cynical.
You need to have some respect. Personal attacks on an a poster as serious and established as sweet_scientist is out of line.
Are his balls tasty or do you prefer giving him rimjobs? You ***boy, if Sweet_****wit wants to call Pros 'bitches' it opens him up to the same trash talk
Pop don't you think Hopkins would have been better off trying to make fights with the likes of Roy Jones, Montell Griffin, Dariusz Michelczewski, Calzaghe (at 168 when Joe was in his prime) rather than making all those middleweight defenses against low caliber opponents? About Hopkins above middleweight, well imo he has cherry picked some guys that suit his style, and fought some of them at weights where they didn't belong. That's not exactly what one should do if they are serious about leaving a legacy. Some parting questions for you: are you critical of Mayweather for fighting Juan Manuel Marquez at welterweight? If so, why? Didn't Hopkins do something similar to Winky? Are you critical of Floyd fighting Hatton at welterweight? If so why? Didn't Hopkins do something similar to Calzaghe & Pavlik? Are you critical of Mayweather for scaling weights and not fighting the best guys there? If so why? Hasn't Hopkins to some extent done that too? (Skipped 168 entirely, isn't fighting Dawson at lightheavy etc.) Some food for thought.
LMFAO@Hopkins' retirement. That's a good one. Hopkins had no qualms fighting Winky and Pavlik at 170, so I'm sure he could have shed another couple of pounds to fight Joe at 168. But nah, that would have made the fight too much in Calzaghe's favour, so that was never going to happen. He had to fight Joe somewhere he had an advantage. Calzaghe was happy to move up and so the fight got done at lightheavy, but there's no way known Hopkins would have taken that fight at 168 despite the fact that he could make the weight. Probably one of the reasons he skipped that division in its entirety when moving up. As for the Winky fight, Winky was a fat waddling mess at 170. That fight should never even have been made. How serious was the prospect of facing Joe Calzaghe? Joe had flat out shrugged off the suggestion of fighting him given that Pavlik would be up against it moving up to face higher calibre guys that were also at higher weights. Bernard was happy to accommodate Pavlik's fantasy though. Hopkins going after Jones right now is very lame. 10 years ago it was very necessary if Hopkins wanted to stake a claim as one of the greatest ever.
It seems a bit odd to disagree about Hopkins and then mention Calzaghe. They're both cut from the same cloth. Play it safe, rack up defenses, negotiate absolutely every advantage possible, wait until the twilight of your career when you've made your money to take any real chances. If you mention Calzaghe for those reasons, it doesn't make sense to defend Hopkins considering he's done essentially the same thing with his career. If I'm looking at it from their perspective, I can't say I disagree with the way either of them ran their career to be honest. As a fan though, I can't help but think they both left some potential accomplishments on the table.
The only difference is Hopkins IBF defenses are against legit middleweight fighters of the time, especially when compared to Calzahges defenses which are on par with Brian Nielsons 49 wins at heavyweight. :good
1. Hopkins words if I remember rightly 'I was sitting with my feet up, false teeth out, drinking coco in my rocking chair, enjoying my retirement ,watching boxing when this Calzaghe said he wanted to fight me'. 2. Your acting like Hops is picking on a smaller guy or getting some advantage from fighting at 175 when Calzaghe is the bigger man and had wanted to goto 175 for 5years, plus he never fought at 168 again. Hopkins only weighed in at 173 anyway, hardly a monster LHW picking on a small SMW is it? And size was never an issue in that fight 3. Winky was out of shape at the weight but it was considered a 50-50 going into it, if in fact Winky wasnt the favourate. Winky had just got off outboxing and outworking Taylor who beat Hopkins 4. Yes Calzaghe did turn down Pavlik and even made up a lie that Pavlik turned him down in 2006. But if Pavlik won and more impressively than Joe did he'd be considered the best LHW, make himself a star and force the fight. Pavlik was most peoples favourate going into this fight and top10 P4P Doesnt it make it impressive that a 43yo Hopkins had the balls to take a fight that Calzaghe avoided? 5. Agreed he should have fought him for 40% if he wanted to. But then again he may have made less than that. He'd end up making far more against Delahoya as it was and this was likely his plan after the Tito fight. At the end of the day boxing is a business and most people would chase the biggest money fights if they were in these fighters shoes
