This is what Jackie said on the matter.

"I'd be lying,' she stressed, 'if I said I wasn't hurt, I was stunned, I wasn't horrified. One of the things he said was that I don't care about him/ I just never expected to hear that from James. I treated this kid like he's my family. We all traveled together as family, we went on holiday cruises as family. Personally. I don't think I could have dome much more for him. Yes, boxing is a business but I've never taken a penny that I haven't rightfully earned. I'm sure James fights for the money also. I don't think he's in this game just because he loves the beauty o the ring."

"He said he had the flu and that I forced him into fighting Roy Jones. At the press conference and at the weigh in he was certainly fit and ****y enough. He thought he was going to win then. No one made James Toney fight Roy Jones. He's always been the one that says he's the boss, that he calls the shots. So or him to turn round and say that I made him fight is absurd. No one makes that kid do anything! 'He's told his mother that he'll apologize if I apologize to him first. Well, I'm still trying to think what I should apologize for. For making him a millionaire, for getting him the biggest pay day of his career? Who knows what our future holds because I just don't think the words "I'm sorry" are in his vocabulary. He cant bring himself to say it."

"But, you know, I'm a compassionate person. I'm not hard nosed. Part of me understands why all of this has happened. I know how disappointed he was having to lose a big fight. Hardest of all for him was the way he lost, the fact that he was virtually run out of the ring. It wasn't a tight fight, there was no controversy about the decision. I think that was most hurtful to him, the fact that it wasn't even close. His whole identity was crushed. One minute you're the champion and the pound for pound number one, and the next minute you're basically just another fighter."

If fairness how a fighter prepares for a fight is his own responsibility and credit should not be taken away if he trains less than 100%. Likewise whether Jones was weight drained or not against Tarver is irrelevant also.

I see your point, but the circumstances are completely different. James had no dedication, and ate fast food even in the middle of camp. That's completely unprofessional. But Roy took a risk and went up to heavy, and then took another risk and made history by coming back down. You can't have any sympathy for James, letting himself balloon up like he did. But Roy cut muscle to make weight. He trained 100% for that fight. You could say that it was his own responsibility for losing the weight, but you can sympathise, and give him credit for going to HW in he first place. How many former MW champions have gone up to HW? None of today's SMW's or LHW's look like going up.

I agree. Bernard never beat Toney, or Jones, or anyone that was elite at the same weight. He beat elite guys that came up. And the tarver win is not that great. First of all, that wasn't prime Tarver, and he was indeed weight drained. People bring up Roy being weight drained vs Tarver when he got KO'd (funny how he actually beat Tarver after coming down from HW, when he should have been at his most dehydrated), but they never bring up the fact that Tarver shed a lot of weight after the Rocky movie.

I've not heard people say that Roy was weight drained for the Tarver rematch. He was clearly weight drained for the first fight, but he was in far better shape for the rematch. He got caught with a great punch, and although Tarver had his eyes closed, he deserves credit. But at 35, after having had 50 fights and going to HW and back, Roy was clearly not the fighter he'd been previously. But again, Tarver deserves credit.

Tarver did have to shed weight after the Rocky movie, and his famous "You got any excuses tonight?" comment that he made to Roy, came back to haunt him big time. He then realised just what Roy had gone through for their first fight, and also claimed that he'd be poisoned too.
