Hopkins can't help who the IBF had ranked. That being said, those guys were better than shopworn 154 pound Ouma, Rubio, Nunes, Tapia, Simon etc. Vanes wouldn't have beaten Mercado in Quito that day either. The records of those boxers when Hopkins fought them was significantly different than the final records you linked.

 

That didn't stop people dumping on Golovkin for fighting Wade. Steve Frank was a last minute replacement for Lipsey. Personally, I can understand that Bernard would want to save the fight. But people dump on Golovkin for facing Brook and Vanes as last minute replacements. Hopkins seems to have something to say about it, too ... so I feel justified in pointing out that Frank was about half a step up from being an actual bum.

I'll give you Nunes, who was God-awful. The rest of the guys you mentioned are all better than those three Hopkins victims. Tapia beat Heiland and gave Trout a tough fight. Simon went the distance with Sylvester and Abraham and has some better-than-useless scalps on his record. Ouma and Rubio are lightyears better than those three bums.

According to Hopkins fans it sounds like Mercado was the Terminator and friggin nobody would have beaten him. I disagree.

The records are there to be seen. Heavily padded and they lost whenever they stepped up.

Lost everytime they stepped up is a trait shared by most Golovkin opponents. Regarding Mercado, Mercado was very game that day in Quito. A guy like Vanes wouldn't have made it the distance at that temperature, and altitude with that Mercado.

 

HIs fighter is dirty, like he was.
