You have to understand the context of the time. This was years ago when the belts were still dictating a lot of TERRIBLE fights, and NO big fights were being made in the early 2000's...everyone was dodging each other.

Nowadays, it's superfight after superfight, which is nice.

    Million dollar question.

Maybe because it was mandatory as part of his job as an HBO Commentator, just like it was mandatory for Hopkins to fight Hakkar as part of his job as WBC Middleweight Champion. Tough to explain that to some people.

So asking questions leads to a person being "spanked"? I would say Hopkins was defeated if he had no response, but in fact Hopkins answered everything, and more. He made Larry out to be a fool.

larry's an idiot. would he have prefered hopkins gave up the belt and had some non worthy contenders fight for the vacant title? what a tool. anyone who's been in the game as long as merchants drunk ass should know better.

larry: well i can assure you it won't happen again
hopkins: well let me tell you something larry unless you got powers other than being a commentator then thats part of the problem
pretty funny interview but larry's been becoming increasingly annoying for years if the fights not a pacman-morales war he dont wanna know

I dont respect commentators who act like pricks toward fighters. What have they done aside from being the same as arm chair sports fans? Nothing.

In the UK we had a guy called Gary Newbon who would give fighters a hard time after a fight."Trying to make a name for himself" is how Frank Bruno described him.
Anyway, eventually our top boxers refused to speak to him after a fight,so ITV got rid of him.
    Simple.
I cant understand why that hasnt happened with Larry the wino.
Newbon wasnt even a **** head and could ask a simple question within 2 minutes, unlike Liquor Larry.

The only way in which the Hakkar fight was notable is that it's the fight, after taking a year hiatus, Hops took when he backed out of the Joe Calzaghe fight.

Looking at who each guy fought during that time (Daniels, nobody, then Hakkar for Hops and Pudwill and Jiminez for Calzaghe), that fight happening instead would've helped both guys' resume out significantly. Not that I don't see why Hopkins did it; he got himself the Oscar payday just a couple fights afterwards, which might've been one of the biggest coups in terms of actual risk/reward in recent boxing history.

It would have been sweet if Hopkins pointed out that they both had contractual obligations. "I was forced to take this crappy fight as a mandatory, and you Larry, were forced to take this crappy fight as a mandatory.
