In terms of using illegal tactics the YES! This is boxing afterall.....they don't wear gloves on their foreheads do they?? If i was a huge fan of any boxer and they won like that I'd feel disappointed....from the point of view of the fighter, then fair enough win at all costs but it tarnishes reputations if you consistently fight dirty......and that could be any fighter...not specifically Hopkins, dont get that mixed up cos I dont hate B-Hop

But illegal tactics are only illegal when you get caught, right?

No....theyre always illegal....the queensbury rules will always deem use of the head not allowed....if you adopt them and dont get caught then I guess its simply an illegal tactic that goes un-noticed

Well, Bob Dylan once said that "In Jersey anything's legal as long as you don't get caught", and I tend to believe it's an applicable analogy.

When you have a guy like Andrew Golota who uses his head as a battering ram and worked on Riddick Bowe's balls like a speedbag, he deserved every penalty and subsequent DQ he received.

But when you're a crafty veteran who knows how to bend the rules in your favor without getting caught, power to you.

That is no easy feat, and as the saying goes, 'protect yourself at all times'.

Calzaghe loves a tear-up as much as anyone out there.....Bika is way dirtier than Hopkins is, Bernard has way more ability than Bika but in terms of headbutts, low-blows and rabbit punches the Bika fight was awful.....and Calzaghe was just laughing in Bika's face and strutting......I honestly believe Calzaghe's reputation as a spoiler is going largely un-noticed....listen to Lacy and Kessler to hear what they say about Calzaghe on the inside

If it were so easy for Hopkins to neutralize a younger, more active opponent, why wasn't he able to do it X2 versus Taylor?

Anyone talented fighter with legs and a workrate would have a chance against today's version of Hopkins.

Fair enough...but you seem to be looking at it froma fighters pint of view.....wouldnt you as a fan rather see Hopkins bully and beat up Calzaghe using boxing nouse, energy and skills rather than old-manning him for 12 rounds using the occasional illegal move???

Well, he was able to do it. He started a bit too late in their first bout, and he got jobbed in the decision in the rematch.

Unsubstantiated nonsense with no basis in fact.

i just don't see those supposed "paths to victory " working against Calzaghe.
I'm picking Hopkins, but not the way described in this thread. Yeah, Bernie's going to try everything dirty and legal, but I'm thinking the straight right over Calzaghes gloves when he comes wading in is going to be the deciding factor.
    BUT...If B-Hops timing isn't perfect, then he's in trouble.

I was never a Hopkins fan, but have grown to appreciate his versatility inside the ring.

The man can fight successfully using many different styles, and he is an intelligent fighter who usually knows which style to employ. He is also great at sticking to a game plan.

That didnt answer my question though.....theoretically if you were a huge Hopkins fan would you rather he won on boxing skill alone or dirty tactics?? From a fans point of view....cos surely fighting dirty only asks questions about fighters rather than cementing legacies...I know B-hop is a legend in American boxing but nobody can ignore then fact that his two biggest wins came against guys who were probably too small to share the ring with him bu thad the huge, huge names.....I like B-Hop and respect what he has done and made of himself especially into his 40s but everytime he speaks he calls himself a legend......a term which is greatly over used

I'd be pretty excited if he came out in the first round like Mike Tyson and knocked Calzaghe out.

But that's not going to happen.

He doesnt have to KO Calzaghe to win fairly.....should guys even be allowed into a ring if they know that they cant win fairly? Again this isn't me knocking Hopkins....any fighter who goes into the ring knowing they cant legally match their opponents and will willingly drop the head in with a punch should not be allowed to fight at world level....its called boxing not "crafty-illegal-rabitt-punchy-game"

It's going to take every bit of skill Hopkins has to win this fight. He is going to be rellying on boxing more than anything. But that isn't his only weapon. He is going to use everything.
