Hagler beat Sealesx2 Antuofermo Colbert Finnegan x2 Briscoe Demmings Hamani Hart Baldwin Hamsho x2 Watts Scypion Sibson Roldan Mugabi Hearns That is considerably better than Hopkins record at 160 ,imo.
Hopkins resume is underrated and Monzons/Haglers romanced, both Hagler and Monzon had plenty of dross, plenty of roughhouse journeymen, a few men half their size and plenty of past prime fighters. You also have to ask the question 'what would the young up and coming contenders and fighters coming up in weight have done if Hopkins didn't execute them?' In that way Hopkins is a victim of his own success
And what do I need to do about that list of names? Recently there was a thread with 5 best Hagler's wins, and it looked pitiful, with Hearns at the top. But what has Tommy achieved at middleweight? Wins over Ernie Singletary, Jeff McCracken, Murray Sutherland, James Shuler, Doug DeWitt and Juan Domingo Roldan are hardly something to be very proud about.
You dont need to do anything ,I put them up because I beleive they are better than the names on Hopkins record at 160lbs.Wins over Monroe ,Hart,Watts ,Briscoe,Finnegan,Sibson, are better than Bernards ,imo.
How much do you know about Robert Allen, what other fights have you seen of him? How many fights have you seen of pre-Hopkins Glen Johnson? Ditto about other names on Bernard's resume. From what I've seen, Allen was a better boxer than all 6 names you listed, for example. How old was Briscoe?
Not much ,I know his record does not justify Hopkins fighting him 3 times ,since he never beat anyone at middle worth mentioning. Briscoe was rated no 6 when Hagler beat him in 1978 ,Hagler also beat another 4 of the top 10 contenders of that year . You talk about Hagler beating Hearns ,and say who did Hearns beat at 160?Well he beat a damn sight more middles than ODH ,one of Hopkins touted wins ,Oscar beat Sturm at 160 ,thats it ,and that was bitterly disputed.Hearns beat some good rated middles.
If the Oscar win is touted by anyone, it's not by me. I advise you to get some other fight of Allen, you'd be surprised what a good boxer he was. Hopkins was very wise for the 2nd fight, by choosing to rough Allen, because I'm not sure at all that he could outbox him in a clean fight.
I'm not sure Hopkins could out box Joey Giardello ,or three men who never held the middleweight crown Holman Williams Charley Burley Luis Rodriguez And I'm pretty sure he wouldn't out box Mike Gibbons. Point being Hopkins is talked about as a shoo in for atg at 160 and top 5 placing. I'm not convinced.
Based on all the extensive footage of Burley and Williams you've been viewing I'm sure you could tell Hagler and Monzon outbox them while Hopkins can not I personally think Robin Hood would outbox Hopkins too
I said, "I'm not sure", and I never mentioned Monzon. My point was that Hopkins is being touted as a ATG top 5 middle by some on here. My reference to "outboxing "was a response to Senya stating he was not sure Hopkins could outbox Robert Allen .If you want to make puerile remarks please try and keep up with the context of the post ,otherwise you will have to change your name from" Power Puncher "to "Doesn't Punch His Weight".
Which ones do you refer to? A 29 year old Hakkar, who beat no one ? A 34 year old Jackson who was best as a LM ? A 32 year old Carl Daniels? A 32 year old Keith Holmes? A 29 year old Antwun Echols? A 30 year old Andrew Council? A 28 year old Mercado? A 35 year old Eastman ? How about a 35 year old Allen? Who are these young challengers , whose careers were "executed" by Hopkins?
McVey, who do you think would beat peak Hopkins at 160 of this short list: - Hearns, Duran, 1987 Leonard - Griffith, Napoles, Benvenuti
