I never liked Whitaker's variety. He did out-jab DLH, but seldom let go with many meaningful punches. With that said, it was an extremely tough fight to score. During the close rounds De La Hoya was willing to let his hands go in combinations, something Whitaker seldom done throughout the fight.

And De La Hoya wasn't the aggressor, thats a myth. He was actually standing off Whitaker and being cagey himself for the vast majority of the fight, hence the reason he changed his trainer to Steward afterwards.

Punch stats don't judge fights, the naked eye does.

I agree with you, and scored it 116-111 Calzaghe.

The newest buzzword I've been hearing for those who scored against Calzaghe, as an excuse to him landing twice as many punches, is that Joe had too much "ineffective aggression".

Call me crazy, but that Bernard couldn't land cleanly for the last 3/4 of the fight once Calzaghe adjusted, was getting worn down by the pace Joe was setting, and couldn't outfight Calzaghe on the inside seems a hell of alot more ineffective to me.

I saw Hopkins initiate clinches dozens of times to try and slow down Calzaghe; I did not see Hopkins' counters stop Joe from throwing and attacking.

Didn't you publicize an upcoming fight before in this way and lost embarrassingly? I forgot with who it was with.

First fight with James Toney-Sam Peter. Dr. Z bet me with 110% confidence Sam Peter would knock out james toney in less than 5 rounds. I claimed No Way Toney gets knocked out, he will outbox peter because he is too clever and smart........sure enough the fight was a very controversial split decision win for sam peter........BUT WHO DO YOU THINK WON THE BET?

I think about 85% of posters have cards closer to mine than yours though.

And that groups like the Associated Press and ESPN had Hopkins winning, just goes to show that the fight was rather hard to score, because there were a lot of swing rounds that people scored diversely.

Whilst I think Calzaghe's activity won the day, I don't think it's fair to say that neither fighter was consistently landing clean hard shots and that therefore, Joe had to win just about every round because of his activity. Hopkins was landing the cleaner shots, give him credit for it. Calzaghe was ultimately a little more effective in his punching because he landed so much, but the clean shots go to Hopkins and there's no debate about it as far as I'm concerned. There should be NO implication that Joe was twice as effective as Bernard because he landed double the punches. He simply wasn't.

As for rewarding defense, well, it is a scoring criterion, so why shouldn't I reward it? Hopkins showed good defense, credit to him again for it.

I missed the fight, but all this comment makes me want to watch the repeat tonight...scratch that actually. I'm just glad that miserable old bore is finally hanging them up...hearing how he faked the low blows doesn't surprise me.

This is what pissed me off. Suzie's a good lad but this was no fraud. A close fight where one combatant was obviously busier, initiated the exchanges and landed more; the other worked on a low volume/high accuracy basis. No robbery and when all the scores are collated from the magazines, newspapers, etc- there'll probably be at least a 60-40 split in favour of Calzaghe. I would like Joe to take on a peak 'relatively proven' American fighter like Pavlik though. Rather than a 'last payday' type like Jones.

Calzaghe will never get any credit from the yanks,if he beats pavlik they will say kelly was unproven, and if he beats jones they will say roy is shot.
I think calz should try dawson or maybe tarver to shut up the yanks.
Folks dont even realise how much slower and less hard hitting cal is as compared to his prime...And they keep droning on about the 'x' legend being old.

Jesus! Throwing hell for leather in round two of a scheduled 20 rounder like that? Conseving energy my arse! (And he did this over the 20 round distance a few times.) And who needs a stinking third man in the ring to complain about "low blows" to? (And maybe if formal attire was still required at these events, audiences would be more civilized in their behaviour, instead of creating more entertaining fights in the ringside crowds.)

As a Yank myself, I have to agree.

Calzaghe is 36 years of age and fighting at a weight class that he may be over stretching himself bit. Frankly, I would have liked to see him fight and beat IBF super middleweight champ Lucien Bute, then retire undefeated around 46-0. Fighting Jones isn't going to stengthen his legacy much.

I am American and I feel Calzage won the fight clearly, if the fight had gone to B-Hop it would have been a robbery. Joe fought a good fight and B-Hop seems like he is better than ever, but the pace got to him. I think Joe should now fight to clean up the supermiddle 1 fight or 2 then retire...there is nothing to gain with Jones...and the extra weight was really no benifit for Joe
