I met Bernard Hopkins at the WBHOF in 2001 it was not to long after the Tito fight, they were honoring him as fighter of the year. Anyways i talked with him briefly, and i asked him if Tito was the hardest puncher he fought,he winced and said no way, Trinidad dont got nothing on Antwun Echols he said "Now that man can Punch" !
Echols lands a monster hook flush on Hopkins in their second fight, and B-Hop walks right through it like it was nothing. Even Jermain Taylor's punches in their first fight had more of a visible effect on Hopkins. Maybe he just hid it well against Echols.
I heard it from the Man himself so I think ill take his word for it. From what i remember Echols was moving Hopkins back at times, although he didnt seem visibly hurt you could tell he was feeling them. This is the 1st fight i didnt see the 2nd. In my opinion Echols was one of the biggest punchers in boxing at the time, and this is before i spoke to Hopkins. This was also long a few years before he fought Taylor, but I dont see Taylor hitting anywhere near as hard as Echols.
There's the speed element. Maybe Taylor or Trinidad's punches seemed to be having more of an affect because perhaps the speed caught Hopkins a bit off-guard, maybe he saw Echols punches coming and could prepare for them, but maybe they were heavier. I certainly wouldn't disagree with him, Echols was definately a big, big puncher.
Well Tito is obviously a future 1st ballot HOF. Where as Echols has turned into a journeyman/clubfighter type. I wasnt surprised when he told me Echols hit harder especially at Middle since Tito was really a natural JM and Echols was a big middle with one punch power.
So what? Tito didn't carry all his phenomenal power up to 160lbs. Ask the welterweights he faught about his punching power.
Well thats what i said in one of my posts. if you are referring to me:? I still think he hit hard at middle (ask Joppy) although not as hard as he did at JM or Welter.
That answer is expected. Because neither Tito or Oscar belong up there with those big guys. Tito should have never fought over 154. He is tall but all you have to do is take a look at his skinny legs. Echols was fighting 158-160lbs right at his pro debut. Bigger guys hit harder, simple.
Hopkins has stuck to that statement ever since. He claims Echols is the hardest puncher he has ever faced.
Both Robert Allen and Antwun Echols hurt Hopkins pretty good. Echols hurt him at some point in the fight, but Hopkins weathered it. Allen he was hurt and wound up falling out of the ring when Mills Lane pushed them apart in the Allen fight. I think Hopkins would have lost that fight had he not gotten the DQ he was badly hurt.
yeah thats just a dumb statement from Bhop a natural welterweight or a natural middleweight both hit hard and they are both hitting a natural middleweight...so yeah, i would say he felt echols power more
titos punches at welterweight>titos punches jumping 2 weight classes up to fight hopkins...DUHH he wasnt gunna hit as hard
