thats what happens when you keep fighting mandatories. They don't have a chance to shine bc hops keep them there. And he didn't unify until trinidad. So he was just fighting medicore IBF contenders. At least bhop's 20 defenses is better than Joe Cal's crappy wbo contenders in his hometown.
Ummm, by your logic... Trevor Berbick has the edge over Muhammad Ali. William Joppy has the edge over Roberto Duran. David Diaz has the edge over Eric Morales. No more examples are needed I think...:thumbsup
At that time, and I guess even now, Dawson wasn't a big draw. Really, who the **** is Dawson? And some people thought Glenn Johnson won their fight anyway. So why fight a guy who is basically a nobody, just got 'beat' and couldn't draw flies? The best route would have been for Dawson and Johnson to rematch and the winner to fight Calzaghe. But where's the bucks in that for a last fight? If there's one person who has the right to feel aggreived by Calzaghe is Glen Johnson, who had to endure a couple of Joe's postponments and when Glen asked for a fight, Joe decided to have one more and retire. Pisser.
Notice i put "" around beat insinuating that I believe Hopkins really won. But you are right, bad analogy on my part:nut
Fairly certain Segundo Mercado was ranked #2 contender when he fought BHOP. Hmmm #2 ranked.... hmmm.... A NOBODY! wow
Hey, that seems like a very negative view to take. A lot of times when you look over a fighters resume you can find questionable wins. There's always fights that seem like easy ones because the opponent was not that good or there were factors that made it easier. But when you are the top dog for so long like he was you have to give credit. And it was not a "reign" ( like Calzaghe's, for example) that was just confined to one sanctioning body. Hopkins reigned supreme against all comers. It is true that DLH and TITO came from lower weight's, but Hopkins can only beat who they put in front of him, and he knocked them both out. Even with the cynical interpretation these were mismatches, knocking out DLH and Trinidad are great feats in themselves. Also, wins over Glen Johnson when he was close to prime, and the undefeated Pavlik. Some might even say that talking Calzaghe to a split decision speaks for his abilities.
Monzon - 14 defences, Benvenuti twice, Valdez twice, and old Griffith former Welter great after coming off a loss and a draw - But yeah - What an overrated fighter too... atsch
I think Hop's is slightly overrated now. But not extremely, he deserves all the kudo's on his middleweight reign. If B-Hop wasn't around, Tito would've been middleweight champ back then, for certain. Compared to Cal's best wins, Hop's has done better in his division. There are no guys who can compare to DLH or Tito that are on Cal SMW win list. The only person that comes close is Eubanks, even though he was past it. All the other guys, except Kessler as he is work in progress and depending on what happens in this tourny will make or break him, on cal's SMW list are no better than all the guys that you name on Hop's list. Echols was a good contender back then, so was Sid, and Keith.. and even Joppy even if it was pre-trinidad.
