Until he fought Trinidad, Hopkins was living on the edge of poverty. If he didn't have a wife who was working, he would have been singing for his super at the Sally-Ann. People don't realize how little money there is in boxing. It is like a third world country, a few are making more money than they can count, the rest are near starvation. Hopkins probably made more 50% of his total income from boxing on just two fights, Trinidad and De La Hoya. If you don't draw the fans, you don't draw the money.
Before Hopkins became a partner with De La Hoya, and is now a boxing promoter, he was always ranting and raving about how boxers are getting ripped off. He just didn't understand how little money there is in boxing. Now that he is a boxing promoter, and understands the economics of boxing, he is no longer ranting and raving about how boxers are getting ripped off.
