I have to say, you have a valid point on that line of reasoning. :think

It makes me wonder about boxing in the US. It would seem its almost an "ethnic sport", blacks latinos and asians.

I dont think caucasian american sport fans really follow boxing as whole.

I think that's a fair statement; I'm a white guy who also happens to be a boxing fan, but in the midwest that's really not that common now. I blame marketing, really. Kids can't root for what they're not exposed to and had it not been for my dad introducing me to boxing, I might not've learned how to appreciate what goes in to it. I live a few hours away from Youngstown and alot of people don't even know who Pavlik is- I think it's a case where sometimes the perception is different than the reality. Sure, there's always racist people hyping him up the same way there's ethno-nazi's that back whatever favorite fighter comes from the same group, but that in and of itself doesn't mean Pavlik was afforded an unfairly high amount of attention for what he did and has millions of fans.

From a marketing standpoint, promoters love boxers with an ethnic background that supports its fighters. To go along with what you've mentioned, the regional success of Adamek with his Polish following, Gatti growing from Italian support, etc. are other good examples of this. The true stars in term of drawing power almost always have to start from regional and ethnic support, then the potential to cross over could turn out to be there based on that.

I think someone touched on it earlier, but Hopkins is a black man who grew up before a lot of the laws to protect races were passed/enforced. And being in prison is certainly going to warp his perception of whites. There's also the argument he wants to sell fights in the USA. And getting under white people's skin is a way, whether you like it or not, to get them to loosen their wallets and pay to see him fight.

Reading the thread title, I could tell it'd become a long diatribe on race, but frankly, instead of looking at historic trends, percentages, and the like, this should be a case study of one bitter old man who happens to be black saying what he feels he's entitled to say: that Pavlik was a hype job and he beat the tar out of him.

That debate, regarding whether or not Pavlik is/was a hype job has already been discussed in this thread and the general consensus appears to be that Hopkins is just rubbing salt into Pavlik's wound but he's dead wrong. Thread over.

Hopkins is just not very bright. If he is talking about anything accept boxing it is not worth listening to. Also the talk about black people being unable to be racist is laughable. I don't care what semantics university definition you use. Ask a white kid growing up in the projects if a black guy can be racist.

If they where white and american then boxing would be bigger than ever in the U.S. With that said though, boxing would be bigger in the states if the HW champion was american regardless of the race just as long as they were exciting to watch.

Exactly. Pointing out that Pavlik's skin complexion is a factor in his popularity is just acknowledging a fact.

what did he say that was racits, Pavlik WAS the great white hype, he didnt say anything bad about white people,

but lets face it, white america has not produced an elite athlete in any international sport in quite a while. i dont mean the nfl- which only they play, i mean tennis, basketball, boxing, soccer, whatever. no larry birds anymore thats for sure.

the worlds best atheltes are american- but theyre all africans, and the rest are now hispanic, asian, european, english, austrlian even. who s the best white american in the nba??! steve nash is canadian btw.

before you label this as racist- its just as hopkins was doing, stating fact, if it incites- its your problem for not being able to handle the truth. i for one would like to see a white american dominate a boxing division, it would be good for the sport to have every colour represented- its not a racial thing- its simply primal- we all like it when people who look like us are succesful. thats all it is.

I get a kick out of Hopkins' remarks because they get such a violent reaction from naive bystanders like the thread starter here.

    I disagree.

Who was the most overhyped American of the past 10 years?

    Jeff Left Hook Lacy.....

Black.... no wins to speak of..... incredibly hyped he was...

Hype is hype - and in boxing black boxers are AT LEAST as prone to be hyped as white boxers are.

BHop also said he would never lose to a guy named "Winky" too. That whole "I could never lose to _____" was an angle he used for his fights. Hopkins fans should know this.

People just see things with him as more than what they really are. Hopkins is a guy straight from the harder edge of street life. This kind of trash talk comes naturally to him in the fight game.

Hopkins is no more of a racist than Kelly Pavlik or Joe Calzaghe is. I though it was funny when Joe beat him. But Joe was smart to avoid a rematch. On the other hand, Hopkins vs Pavlik was a massacre. :-(

People also fail to mention how BHop clowns every single one of his opponents leading up to the fight. He almost demoralized Tito Trinidad. People are falling for his tactic hook, line, and sinker. Notice that the Jones fight is coming up.

Hopkins is hoping the people who are annoyed by this will pay to see him lose.

Al Sharpton and jessie jackson would have 10,000 protesters bused in and boycott the venue and sponsers.
