It's interesting that some people have seen this as an attempt to discredit Hopkins, which it is not. I think Richie Leon had the best, most persuasive response. I agree with him, for the most part.
hopkins is the same as calzaghe in a way.what great middleweights in his reign could he have fought?there were none.he could only beat what was there.
More great champions than not had mediocre competition. Look at Larry Holmes. The eras of Sugar Ray Leonard and Ali are very few and far between. Extraordinary talent and historical good fortune don't intersect very often.
What I don't understand is on paper he and Calzaghe have taken the same pathway, of never fighting true contenders. Although you can't say if they have ducked fighters or have been ducked themselves. But why does Hopkins accuse Calzaghe of this when they seem to have a very similar resume, just Calzaghe's is a lot better, because he is undefeated. Hopkins the hypocrite? :think
But we are talking about Hopkins here, I bet you have said exactly the same thing at least 20 times, talking about how Calzaghe has never fought anybody good, when Hopkins hasn't neither. But Calzaghe is still undefeated, unlike Little Bernard. :yep
"never fighting true contenders?" like Jermain Taylor, Winky Wright, Oscar de la Hoya, Roy Jones JR., Tito Trinidad, Antonio Tarver. Or you mean never fighting true Contenders like Bika or Manfredo Jr. like JC?
Taylor is massively over-rated, so was Wright, and so was Tarver, the others were past there best, and De la Hoya took a dive. And if you read my thread I say JC is in the same ship as Hopkins. But I love the way you talk about the best fighters Hopkins has fought, while leaving out Kessler, Eubank and Lacy when talking about Calzaghe, just to strenghen your point falsely. I could have spoke about Hopkins fighting Morrade Hakkar and fighting Robert Allen a pathetic 3 times. So stop hiding the real facts to strengthen your point, it just proves that you know your talking ****.
Hopkins fought his share of "true contenders". It just so happens that a lot of them were not very good. But they were regarded as middleweight contenders at the time.
Sorry Jones wasn't past it, but Hopkins lost to him, anyway. That was the only true contender he has fought.
