I like Cleverly. Good win over Bellew who's a failrly decent fighter.

I think it's fair to say Hopkins did pull out of a proposed fight/negotiations regarding Calzaghe.

Regarding Cleverley, I don't believe he would ever beat a Hopkins and if they did fight it would give Hopkins a new title. But then we all know Hopkins doesn't travel.

At the time when the Calzaghe fight was mooted he hadn't been abroad since the Mercado fight.

He also said Calzaghe should have gone to the US, yet Hopkins doesn't do good ratings and the fight would prob made more money played out in the UK.

Also just because he fought Pascal twice in Canada does not make him the next Ali or Monzon in fights over seas. He did what a true challenger did and go to the champs back yard.

to be fair, the USA is more like a group of countries than one country, its as big as western europe, if not bigger. fighting in lots of places there is equivalent to travelling.

and how the hell a guy like calzaghe, unknow at the time outside wales and with a then unrecognised small time title, can get 3million or more for bernard sounds like serious spin.

Cleverly? dont make me laugh, hes not in bhops league at all although a fortysomething bernard, he would probabvly be able to outgass.

its true hopkins wasnt a cashcow when the calzaghe should have gone to the states to earn a fight with him - it wasn't about the cash - it was about a high risk - low reward fight against someone who nobody knew in the states

this is why there is a common theme of fighter 'x' from europe never getting to fight fighter 'b' who fights out of and made a name for himself in the states

Hopkins did turn down a career high payday to duck the White man.

When they eventually fought he fought like a complete ***** for 11 rounds.

JC would own him at any time of his career , White man who is slick with speed.

you cant play 'woulda, shoulda, coulda' with a fighter who genuinely avoided fights with jones and hopkins when it mattered and just waited until they had lost their titles, were shadows of their former selves and in their forties when he decided to fight them...

i think you need to have a read into the above , Hopkins was offered 3 million , the deal was done , then he turned around and said not enough money. Basically , white boy is too dangerous.

This was a while back around 2003

not too dangerous - high risk, low reward
if calzaghe had made himself known in the states, a fight against hopkins would have been signed, sealed and delivered

he didnt do that, so its just another euro fighter pining for a fight against someone who fought on the biggest stage of all

    Known in the states???

Its called a world title for a reason.

Its not baseball and 'the world series' which involves one country.

    Joe was well known.
