Hopkins in his prime (95-03) I would pick over Pavlik, because during his younger years he boxed more on the outside while still being agressive offensivley . A 39 year old Hopkins and older (04-08) I'd pick Pavlik because Hopkins likes to fight in the inside, and doing against Pavlik would be a disaster. You don't give an opportunity for Pavlik to land his punches and if Hopkins fought Pavlik like the way he fought Wright, Pavlik would seriously hurt Hopkins. A 40 year old Hopkins struggled against Taylor, and Pavlik beat Taylor twice.
Hopkins edges it. Hop has trouble over 12 nowadays but I think he will be able to control the pace against Pavlik due to his experience. Hopkins on pts. A crafty 115-113.
I think it's fair to say that Pavlik could well beat Hopkins by TKO or decision since he beat twice the man who beat Hopkins twice - that is a pure, clear tranfer from fighter A to B to C, A loses to B and B loses to C, therefore A loses to C... There is usually much more to it than transference and therefore, I opt to look at this with the craftiness and slickness perspective and Hopkins should be able to steal this one against the much more unexperienced but physically much stronger Pavlik.
At 160 against an old Hopkins, Pavlik is too busy and would take too many rounds because of it. Hopkins also has a tougher time with fighters he can't physically bully, and I don't think that would be too successful against Pavlik. At LHW or against a younger Hopkins, I think it'd be a different story with Hopkins winning a UD.
Current Hopkins certainly loses this one. The 39 year old Hops (2004) certainly wouldn't embarrass Pavlik but would probably win. Any earlier version of Bernard takes us into the realm of embarrassment.
I like both fighters a lot. I think stylewise Bernard wins this one. Pav is a bit too slow and sloppy inside for Bernard. However, at 39 Nard was getting weaker, trying to make 160. Still, I think Nard busts Pavlik's nose with the straight right hand all night. As the Taylor fight has shown, Pav can be counter-punched and has problems vs. movers (even though JT's footwork is nothing compared to Nard's). Hopkins by wide UD at 175 (past 40), closer UD at 160 (39)
The jerkin' off has made you blind, son. Get your eye-glasses on and rewatch the fight. Pay particular attention to round 12 where Joe knocks Jeff on his ass ! Now THAT fight was an exposure.
