I wouldn't even put that much emphasis on the first title weights. Gusy can continue to grow and mature even after winning their first title. In the fight leading into the hopkins fight Trinidad had fought at 160 and destroyed a fighter that no other middleweight that he had fought to that point was able to KO. Pacquio on the other hand currently fights 2 weight divisions below the proposed wieght for this fight wheras hoya fights 1 weight divison above it. These 2 would be seperated by 3 weight classes in their bouts immidiatly leading into this fight. Plus if you were to measure them every where else, like shoulder width, waist size, bicep size etc the disparities would be much much greater than hopkins vs Tito
Those are all amazing wins, but none are as good IMO. Jeff Lacy cannot be compared to Trinidad in terms of opposition- what has the guy ever done in his career?? He held 1 version of the world title for a brief period, and has since faded into obscurity. Trinidad was #2 p4p, 40-0, unified champion at 2 weights. Pacquiao v MAB I is the next best win of those IMO.
Nah I think Mayweather Corrales was more impressive (than pac MAB). That is another one of those ridiculously under rated wins.
Underrated by those that didnt watch boxing at the time. Everyone that knew boxing, knew that Hopkins would be a problem for Tito. He was a top 10 P4P fighter at the time. People tend to forget this. He was lower top 10 but still in the list. It was a great win for Hopkins. Over time the win became underrated because up to that point, Hopkins at 36 hadnt done anything else other than beat Trinidad. Where was he the previous 10 years? is what people were asking.
IMO, MAB was a far greater fighter than Corrales ever was. At the time MAB fought Pac, MAB was p4p#3 and Pac was a relative unknown from the Far East who used to hold a world title at flyweight, and had a couple of losses on the record. MAB was coming off wins over Hamed, Tapia and Morales amongst others. At the time Mayweather fought Corrales, Floyd was #7 p4p, WBC champion, and had won Fighter of the Year in 1998. Both great wins, but Pac-MAB clearly better for me.
I won't argue this one with you cause both were great wins and a case can be made for both. IMO the floyd win over Corrales was better mostly based on what Corrales went on to accomplish afterwards but I wouldn't have a problem with someone picking Pac over MAB. I guess the pac win over MAB wasn't as big to me cause I kind of saw it coming. I saw a lot of pac fights before that and was really impressed and I really felt that he just needed to oppurtunity to have a break through fight and prove himself.
It was a great win. Overtime, people began underrating the win. Calling Tito a former Welterweight and all that. I am one of the biggest Tito fans. But, ill never use it as an excuse. It was a great win for Hopkins. He was the better man. And, Tito was a beast up until that point.
Is this thread a joke?. How can a full middleweight beating a welterweight be a triumph or a surprise?? :rofl
You should look a bit deeper in his career. He ruined Mercado, ended the career of a guy who was thought of as the second coming of Hagler in Lipsey, defeated good fighters in Jackson, Vanderpool and Echols. It surely wasn´t the best opposition but he fought everyone who was available. I don´t think it was his fault that the competition of his reign was mediocre.
Yeah! Damned this Hagler must have been **** then! Beat up on lightweights and welterweights and even got beat by a welterweight who hadn´t fought in 5 years. What a joke! And don´t let me get started on this bum Monzon ...
