Hopkins vs Calzaghe finally put to bed

  1. 1) All this talk about Hopkins not being in his prime is rubbish. Yesterday proved Hopkins still has it only difference is he couldn't box the crap out of Joe like he did Pavlik it is that simple no discussion.
Whether Hopkins was 30 or 40 his only chance vs Joe was the on the backfoot counter style & dirty infighting he employed not the agressive boxing style used on KP; the few time he tried he failed. Joe shut him down and all he could do given he was getting as good as he gave was grab.

    2) If you want to ***** about Hopkins being past prime then apply the same bloody logic to Joe as well!

    3) Bernard times people, he reads them well. Joe adapted as the fight went on there were no other factors. He changed his footwork and hands............here let me make it easy for you since I know simply saying that half the fanboys here won't know what I'm talking about: Joe increased his footwork changing his positioning and started working with his gloves DOWN when he came in rather than up; Bernard times people via their glove/shoulder alignment.

    4) If Joe hadn't adapoted he'd have been caught & knocked down again. WOULDN'T HE!?!?!?!

    5) Bernard is one of the greatest tacticians ever! He made the fight dirty, Joe did what he had to do in a very difficult situation. If you know of a man who bettered Hopkins at his peak you let me know......and NO Hopkins was not @ his peak vs Jones, he was green. (Prime Jones still KO's prime Hopkins though)

    6) Many say Hopkins 'gassed' vs Joe yet do those people realize Hopkins' punch output in jabs and power punches went UP as the fight went on?

Joe was the second biggest winner of the night after Saturday's fight, behind only Hopkins himself.

I'm thrilled HBO and the press got punked on this fight. Great job, Bernard Hopkins. And I'm not a Pavlik hater, either. But BHop just rolled, and it was great to see.

You are *STUPID*!!!!!!! Hops didnt need that many tools to beat pav but with Calz he needs a lot of tools which takes much more energy to put fourt but in his prime or maybe just a few years ago he had that energy. Look at Bernards old fights and watch how much energy he use's then after that watch the pav fight. Its a huge difference weirdo:patsch You just need to think a little more then maybe you will get it:lol:

yeah i agree, however, there will be people who will demand a rematch bla bla bla. But it also says that pavlik aint that good really!! when he doesnt have his size, reach and weight advantage over the 160 lbrs he's stumped!

"Joe was the second biggest winner of the night after Saturday's fight, behind only Hopkins himself."

Yeah, he showed that to even walk away a winner against Hopkins, no matter how "calsloppy" it may have looked to the casual viewer, is an incredible feat.

McGrain was 100% correct. It really was an outstanding win for Calzaghe, even though I barely believed it myself.

It is very silly to use "prime" in an excuse.

Prime cannot be measured and is thus abused by those that rely less on their brain. It is an abstraction.

If people were using this excuse to discredit Calzaghe, I would be disappointed.

    Welcome to ESB.

Very well made post. I said these for months but this schooling needed to happen to open closed eyes.

Look, anyone who knew fight styles and how to analyse this fight had it in mind that Pavlik was up against it in the absolute wrong style for himself.

Hopkins was the only guy I thought had a chance to beat Calzaghe, although I'm starting to suspect that Jones Jr might have an outside sniff, but in terms of Pavlik vs Hopkins, this was only ever going to have one result

Feel free to search my posts to see me stating that.

    1) B-Hop is past his prime - but still good enough to lick almost anyone. He may have slipped but he's still an elite fighter. A 30 year old B-Hop gives Joe a much, much harder fight.

    2) Not bitchin'.. but Joe's closer his prime than Hopkins is to his.

    3) I've followed both guy's careers. They are two of the greatest ring generals of recent years.. The difference between them is that B-Hop does his homework on his opponents beforehand and comes in with a set game-plan which he tries to stick to - sometimes making for less than exciting fights.. Whereas Joe usually doesn't study his opponents, has no fixed strategy and makes it up as he goes along, making adjustments mid-fight. Calzaghe's a unique fighter, his footwork and sense of distance is maybe the best I've ever seen. As for fighting with his hands down, he always does that once he's figured the other guy out and he's into his flow. And it allows him to throw punches from odd angles.

    4) Obviously yes.

    5) Sorry, no way does Roids knock B-Hop out.. Roids has never knocked out a top class fighter in his life, and B-Hop has never even been buzzed. If a knockout happens it'll be Roids staring at the lights, not B-Hop.

    6) B-Hop was getting gassed. Joe set a hot pace and he was feeling it towards to end.. His punch output may have gone up but that was in response to Joe's increasing pressure.. But against Pavlik it was B-Hop who dictated the pace - he was in complete control which is why he was so much more comfortable.

No proof is available for this claim.

Since "prime" is not based on age alone (see Tyson/Lewis), the claim is worthless.

It seems almost ridiculous to say that a 43 year old is close to his prime, but it's hard to ignore such a reality with Hopkins after last night's performance.
And I don't believe it's all just because Pavlik is crap. Granted, Kelly's style may have played right into Bhop's game, but you don't totally dominate a hard punching, talented guy like Pavlik when you're a washed up old man.
