Maybe when he got up against McCall and wanted to continue? And adversity isn't just about getting off the canvas. He had a tough hard fights against Mercer and Vitali. How many of those did Joe "I dont want tough fights" Calzaghe have?
Thats the thing, even when Joe was underdog like he was against Eubank and Lacy or the lesser rated fighter like he was against Reid, he found ways to win, even when going up in weight, bloated, fighting away, at a new weight with brittle hands, he found a way to win and not make it too hard on himself. Amazing. When Calzaghe did get put down he never had to hold, he got up and went for it
Toobad he is already being forgotten and in 10 years the only person left talking about him will be you. Thats the problem when you only fight for money and not for legacy... it sounds like a great plan but eventually when your career is over and you realize noone cares about you anymore you become a cokehead to cope.
I dont think hes forgotten, there seems to be a thread on here about him every week and I havent done one for a while
No reason to sling mud on either Calzaghe or Lewis. They were both fine fighters - but both could also have done more. Lewis had a somewhat deeper resume but also lost twice (though later avenged them). Calzaghe should have done more earlier in his career but we never saw him beaten. Both fighters should do British fight fans proud. Like I said, I consider them about equal, there is no reason to slag off either one.
Calzaghe said himself that he did not want to have tough fights. If you take that stance then you are going to end up with a lacklustre resume. http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Boxing%3A+I%27m+lord+of+the+Welsh+rings+says+Calzaghe.-a060444934 I guess we will have to agree to disgree
They are not equal by a long shot, they won't be remembered as equals and they definitely will not go down in the history books as equals. Lewis dared to be great, Joe dared to make money and as a result will go down history as a better version of Ottke.
Calzaghe said he had to starve himself to get down to 168, I am not sure how that makes him "bloated" at 175.
In Lewis' last fight he beat one of the best Heavyweights of the next generation. Joe beat well... Shot Roy.
