51 year old Bernard Hopkins is taking on 27 year old Joe Smith on Dec 17 . Does the cagey old man still have what it takes to keep a prime strong Smith at bay ?
Who knows? Smith appears to be the type of fighter whose style is the archetype Hopkins typically excelled against. But he's going to be 51, and hasn't fought in 2 years.
I really would like to see Hopkins get a good nap from a couple of 1-2s from a man with the most generic name in history, Joe Smith. Much love to B-Hop aka The Executioner aka The Alien but, he ducked James" Lights Out" Toney for over 25 years. Time for B-Hop to get carried out on his shield like a Spartan.
It wouldn't surprise me if BHop pulls it off,one things for sure he's not gonna rush in like Fonfara made the mistake of doing?
Yea he ducked toney no doubt and Roy ducked that rematch at heavyweight I love toney great boxer very underrated
Nard never ducked anyone hunted & embasassed Jones jr trying to get a rematch same thing with Calzaghe Nard even offered to go to Wales I don't know why he keeps fighting its not for the $$$$ guess its in his blood. Hope he goes out with a win
I am actually going to root for Hopkins, Joe Smith is a one dimensional plodder with heavy hands, easy work for the Alien.
I'll go with Smith , he punches well with both hands and clever enough to use enough of Kovalev's tactics not to fall into Hopkins game . Time catches up with everyone , Hopkins really shouldn't be fighting anymore .
Joe Smith will KO or SD Hopkins, I have no agenda here, personally I like Hopkins more than Smith and I'm going to be rooting for him, but a guy who's spent 2 years out of the ring and is 51 against a relentless two fisted power puncher probably isn't going to end well for him, no matter how great he once was, and even if Smith KO's him, that takes nothing away from Kovalev's performance, that was against a Hopkins who'd been incredibly active for the few years prior.
I think that if B-Hop has anything left, he'll probably outpoint Joe Smith. It will probably be ugly and not too decisive a victory, but Smith is just too ordinary for him. Don't forget that Smith was supposed to be a walkover for Fonfara, and early in the round it looked like just that. Until Smith connected and turned the tables. B-Hop's chin and recovery are just too good for Smith to pull this off I believe. I do expect an early KD though.
I'm looking forward to this fight , seeing what the old man has left , what strategy he will use against the powerful Smith . SMith would be wise to fight cautiously mix up his punches going up and down , working the body and don't follow Hopkins around getting caught in Hopkins traps . The jab will be key , throw it coming in and pulling out .
