Who would want to see that? Their first fight was garbage. The rematch they had was awful as well. You would think with two guys who supposedly hated each other there would be more action neither guy wanted to engage. Jones wanted to pose and feint the whole fight and Hopkins wanted to head butt and fake low blows :roflatsch it was absolute ****.
The rematch was way more exciting and dramatic than the first fight, and was only seen as awful because of Hopkins fouling and antics the few times Roy retaliated. Its hard to visualize Hopkins beating Roy Jones before he moved up to Heavyweight. But considering Roy would have been pretty drained having to drain himself to 168, well maybe Hopkins has a chance there but Roy would never agree to that. He was on his way up to Heavyweight, not back down to Super Middleweight. It wasnt until Roy declined that anyone thought Hopkins could beat him. And even then, when they fought in 2010, Hopkins did a lot to put those thoughts into question.
Bhop figured out jones in the first fight. He clear as day won the last 4 rounds. If they had an immediate rematch I have no doubt Bhop wins.
It's all Bernard Hopkins fault. You ever see how exciting a prime Roy Jones was? In most his fights he put on a show. But Hopkins is a spoiler who does nothing when he's outgunned but try and survive. All he did in the first fight was throw 1,000 pointless jabs.
Jones was never a big LHW and was coming in several lbs under the limit. I think he could've made 168 and not be too affected. And as we saw with Bhop later in his career, he really filled out well when he moved up to LHW. So with the limit being at 168, he just didn't need to hold back as much. So the size difference in 2002 wouldn't be that much of an issue imo. Speed always bothered Bhop (Jones, Taylor, Dawson, Calzaghe) and I think Jones' speed would've always given Bhop fits. So I say Jones UD.
Hopkins and Jones are on the same level.. one with more speed.. the other more gold.. But it's the way they came up.. that Jones won.. IMO only 115-113 in their first fight.. in my scoring..
Roy was still great in 2002. I think he'd have had too much for Bernard. Bernard turning down $6m and wanting $10m speaks volumes.
A rematch in 2002 would have a been a huge fight. Everyone remembers their famous argument live on HBO
Bernard didn't clearly win the last 4, and Roy had a fractured hand. There's nothing to suggest that Bernard would have been favoured in an immediate rematch.
