I did this a while back but I want to do it again and get some more opinions as that thread was mostly split with an edge to Monzon, but now after this performance does your opinion of the match change at all, and if not, what was your opinion on the match-up anyway.

I personally lean towards Hopkins. Monzon depended more on his size and against Hopkins he'd be going up against a man an inch or two taller than himself with only an inch shorter reach, and Hopkins is clearly faster with better footwork. I think Monzon's jab and sense timing and range were better than just about anyone Hopkins' has fought, but I see Hopkins' speed and footwork generally controlling the action.

    Thoughts?

I picked Monzon then and I pick Monzon now. Imo nobody beats prime Monzon at mw. Not even Hopkins although I think of all the fighters on film he has the biggest chance.

IMO, Monzon beats Hopkins, Monzon beats Hagler and... Hopkins beats Hagler.

I picked Hopkins in a thread some time ago, it may or may not have been yours. My reasoning is based on a similar line as yours, the cobra.

I'm going with Monzon by a close ( and probably desputed decision. )

I think the closest Monzon saw to Hopkins was Griffith, a naturally smaller man who was just a shade past his best, and he gave Carlos plenty of problems, many feeling he won the 2nd fight.

Monzon is still greater in my opinion, but I've always seen this as a style match-up that favors Hopkins enough for the close win.

Pavlik fight wouldn't change my mind on this or any other Hopkins middleweight matchup one way or the other.

Prior to losing against Hopkins, pavlik has been one of the most overrated middleweight champions in a long, long time.I took great joy in seeing him whipped by Hopkins. The most i've enjoyed a hops fight since Tito.

I really wish this current trend of hyping the undisputed middleweight champions beyond all reason stops now.During the Taylor vs PAvlik fights it was as if many in the general forum had actually convinced themselves they were watching two age-old greats of the division competing and not fighters who still had a helluva lot to prove.especially taylor after string of junk performances.

If you've seen the fight then you know how close it was, I had Monzon ahead by two points. I don't have any official sources of who said it, but there are a few I have heard on this and other sites and watching it, even though I gave it to Monzon, I can see the case for Emile.

Close decision for carlos most likely. His jab is much better than Hopkins jab and i think that will be key.He controls the distance so well that 'nards usual lead rights and quick surges inside won't be as frequent\successful as usual.

this is best against best of course.Sure Hpkins at his best probably beats Monzon from Griffith rematch, just as Hopkins from the Robert Allen bout has little chance against the monzon from benvenuti 1.

Junk performances? Beating Hopkins twice, drawing with Winky - former undisputed 154 pound champ, Top3 p4p at the time - beating former 154 beltholder Ouma, beating former 147 and 154 champ Spinks ... I don´t know, when you look at past fighters who did similar they get a lot of praise. Taylor got and gets far too much ****. He surely isn´t a a great fighter but a very good one who took on the best during his brief reign at mw.

That looks a lot better on paper than it did in the ring.
