Your logic would hold up if Pavlik and Calzaghe were even remotely similar Pavlik might not 'slap', but his punches are slower and more predictable. He doesn't give any of Calzaghe's angles. Why did Calzaghe do fast short arm flurries? To land. That is how good Hopkins' defence is. Pavlik wouldn't lay a glove on him, he doesn't have Calzaghe's speed or footwork. It's still possible for Pavlik to outwork him as I already said, but he'd land much less than Calzaghe, and would really struggle in the clinches against Popkins - he'd get old manned. Calzaghe had some experience of that **** against dirty fighters like Reid and Bika.
hopkins may have beat him in his prime but he would definitly lose now. b hop lost to jermaine taylor 2 pavlik beat jt 2 do the math
this could be a perfect example of styles making fights hopkins experience and adeptness at inside roughousing and his good counter rights, plus hopkins has a good chin...................I dont see pavlick taking the X man
there is a hole in your logic jones beat hopkins hopkins beat tarver tarver beat jones styles make fights
I think Hopkins knocks Pavlik out. Aolt of people are high on Pavlik, I like him too, he's fun to watch and he's a good fighter; but, when I watch him I see someone VERY beatable. Old man Hopkins will be the best and smartest fighter he's ever faced. Pavliks defense is so leaky, and his chin is readily crackable. His offesnse is very, very readable. Hopkins defense is tight as a g-string, and his offense is super sneaky. Hopkins accumlitates that laser -accurate-right-hand on Pavlik and stops him.
Fair enough :happy, but why did Taylor beat Hopkins? Pavlik dominated Taylor in their first match and technically outboxed him in their second match. The logic is simple, if Hopkins lost to Taylor twice and Pavlik beat Taylor twice, Pavlik would beat Hopkins. You are right Pavlik could outwork Pokins just like Taylor did. Additionally, Pavlik is longer than Calzaghe, which means he can stay away from Popkins and avoid more of his clinches. Pavlik is more predictable because he fights off his jab, but it his jab that wins him fights and it is his jab that would keep Popkins at bay. And for all the predictability of his jab, it works. Even if he landed less punches than Calzaghe because he lacks the speed, his punches are straighter and faaaaar more powerful. He could land 1/3 the punches Calzaghe landed and win the fight. Not to mention, like Calzaghe, he has a helluva chin.
Big hopkins fan but I don't think he could win based solely on punch output. I think he would land the harder punches and not get hurt but would loose on workwrate just like in taylor and calzaghe fights
As much as I love and followed Hopkins whole career the way the industry of boxing is setup today a good younger fighter will get the nod now against the greater older fighter especially if the older fighter is brash and say things like(I will never lose to a white boy) Hopkins is greater and better than Pavilk but cards will always goes to th younger fighter Hopkins need to find fighters pass 36 to fight my prediction Pavilk by industry decision just like in the Taylor fight a gift.
Hopkins almost died of fatigue in that fight. Pavlik by heart attack over Hopkins. But this fight will NEVER happen. No point debating it.
I don't see Hopkins active enough to beat Pavlik by decision at this point in his career. Can B-Hop score a K.O. Vs. Pavlik? Maybe? It's been a while since "The Executioner" K.O.'d/T.K.O.'d someone who was a legit "Middle" (02). But I will say That Hopkins is gonna hang around until someone can Knock him out. Maybe Pavlik is that guy at the right time in B-Hop's life to give Hopkins the defeat he belives an outgoing champion should get? (B-Hop is tired of losing decisions, he defo wan't's to go out on his back)
A knockout is never a gift but Taylor and Pavilk are younger good fighters and two guys that the industry wants to see out with the old in with the new even though the Jones,Hopkins,Johnson,Tarver,Wright,Toney's of the world are still good they need to fight each other and stay away from the younger guys because they will never win in the judges eyes only by knockout.
Completely Agree; the logic I used is just one predictive factor. Many other factors come into play including as you mentioned styles; another would be age at the time of fights; a third would be punishment taken in previous fights. Etc. Etc. That is why no true way to predict winners in boxing matches exist. Listen, Hopkins is cagey and could very well beat Pavlik. I just don't think you can discount a guy who in one year beat Miranda and Taylor twice. One counter argument that hasn't been made yet is that Hopkins gave Calzaghe his toughest fight yet and Calzaghe arguably is the best super middleweight of all time. Hopkins made Calzaghe look bad and noone else has ever done that. If he can do it to Calzaghe, there definitely is an argument that he would be able to do similarly to Pavlik.
At this point Pavlik KOs Hopkins. Hopkins throw 5 punches a round hes old he cant hang with a young gun like Pavlik
