Yea Wright turn down 5 million dollars to face Taylor again and instead move up to lightheavyweight catchweight for 2 million to fight Hopkins.
I never really payed too much attention to Winky untill recently, I watched Wink/Mosley 1&2 back to back, Vargas, Trinidad and Taylor and I instantly became a fan.One of the most underrated boxers alive.:good
the tito fight was his high water mark he beat mosley twice then tito who he absolutely dominated he was never quite as good after that fight
thumbsup He's criminally under appreciated. Definitely a H2H nightmare style wise for just about anyone in history at 154 and made a good account of himself at 160. Wink's a good man.
Yeah this, now my memory comes back. Horrible decision. For both fighters really. Shame how Winky's fight ended, litterally being used as a stepping stone for Paul Williams, while he was twice the better fighter then Williams ever was. His dismantling of Tito Trinidad was really, really a masterpiece. Add to that the 2 wins over Shane and reigning the 154 pound division for almost 10 years, he should be hall of hame. Oh yeah and i thought he should ve gotten the decision against Vargas ( who was a great fighter in his early days). And he claims to be robbed against Simon and Vasquez, but i never saw these fights.
I might have to watch this again...I just couldn't bring myself to do it before because it was just a sorry excuse for a fight. The extra weight hurt Winky but the it seemed to rejuvenate the old man. Even with that it was a very close fight...Winky seemed to do the more consistent work. Nard had the body language of a man in control, he was always the better ring general...but it was hard to split rounds. ' Maybe it was because I wasn't particularly enthralled...but I have never drunk the "Nard won wide" kool aid.
It was as bad as Jones-Hopkins II. horrible fight. Credit to Winky for dealing with that nasty cut as well as he did though.
Hopkins won, but I remember thinking before the fight, if there was ever a fight to put BIG money on it turning out a draw, this would of been the one. One thing I really enjoyed, the HBO Countdown show for this one was really entertaining. Damn I miss those.
Let's give Hopkins some credit here. Winky was a top 3-4 P4P fighter at the time and riding high and was the slight favorite. Winky came to fight but Hopkins was a class above. Winky threw nothing but arm punches. Hopkins landed the hard, flush shots. Winky did look bloated but Hopkins clearly won this fight. Hopkins pretty much derailed Winky's career.
