I highly doubt that. I've seen plenty of white sporting figures make racially charged comments without experiencing a whole lot of backlash. Considering boxing isn't even that big of a sport in the U.S, Hopkins has gotten a good amount of flak for his comments. I really don't know what else people want.
Hopkins wasn't selling the figh when he said that. He really meant it. It was a racist comment that came up from the heart. He tried to get out of it by repeating it and insisting that it was taken down, so that it looked planned and intentional, rather than an emotional outburst. That didn't work. Then he said he was selling the fight, to make it look as if he didn't mean it. Didn't work either. Then he tried to hide behind "his people" explaining how it wasn't really racist, but that in his hometown, this is precisely how his homies think, etc., - what a disgrace! Couldn't ever imagine Jermain Taylor, for example, saying stuff like that...And finally, he went back to the "trying to sell the fight" excuse. I wasn't offended, because I'm white, and I know a bit about the history of white discrimination/racism against blacks, and its consequences, especially in America. But I would have been very offended if Calzaghe - a white man - had made the same comment about black men, though. But that doesn't mean that it wasn't a racist comment or that it was acceptable. Anyway...the fact he is racist is bad, but perhaps understandable, to a certain degree, given his life experience and culture he lived under, even though, since then, he's had amazing opportunities few people have had, and one would expect a change of attitude... What is worse for me is that he was a brutal thug. Of course, he says he had no choice but to become a thug given his background, etc. This I find offensive. Perhaps I shouldn't. He says himself he is the baddest man in the world.
I understand why its pissed you off! Just that i dont really think about that stuff personally, cant wait for the fight!!
