It's been years since i've seen it to be honest, my personal recollection was Smith's good defence off his back, he didnt take much serious damage while Coleman was on top. That and ability to weather the early storm that BIG Coleman was always going to bring to his smaller opponent. Smith bided his time, developed some good takedown defence, when Coleman maxed out, Smith finished the job. From memory his training and business partner at the time was Frank Shamrock who no doubt would have had a big hand in Maurice's prep and game plan for the Coleman fight, Frank did the same thing against a young Tito. ...anyway im straying off a bit here lol. With the right style of opponents Hoppa might make a coupla bucks doing mma, may put a couple more bums on seats at some local shows. Against a goodish grappler i could see Hoppa (who lets face it is no spring chicken) gassing quite quickly. But as was mentioned earlier in the thread players like Priddis and Withers i think could make a very credible transition into the sport with the right training, i found it quite an interesting idea.
I hope Hoppa makes a buck at MMA too. He does gas easy. But you can clinch against the cage and that gives him the option to strike in bursts and then hold on.
he should only have a couple of fights at most! he is a tough unit but he aint gettin any younger, he has done well and embarressed him self in 2 sports(he was great for manly but ruined it coz of his ego&pride), boxing he did well but the same, MMA he should get in make a quik buck get out
I dont watch much MMA, so dont really understand this much. But surely Hoppas boxing experience would give him some sort of advantage in MMA. In fact, from what i have seen him, his style would be reasonably suited to it, because he does punch reasonable (compared to what i have seen in mma anyway) and he wont have to contend with any type of decent defence, would he? Obviously the wrestling and choking wont help him, but i would have thought for someone as phyically decent as Hoppoate, he could learn this much easier (certainly than it was for him to learn to box) and in fact he would have a far better chance of success in mma than in boxing. Or am i wrong, and has MMA now taken over boxing in terms of difficulty level?
Lucas Browne found out how far he could go in MMA when he met Daniel Cormier, former US Olympic wrestler.....Browne was taken down to the mat and was destroyed good old ground and pound, it was brutal and decisive. Hoppa V any kind of half decent wrestler with better than average mat skills ends Hoppa in a bloody mess.
he would likely not fight anybody too skillful really. just fight a few bums, make a few bucks, and move on.
True. But hand picked opponents with zero ground-skills could make Hoppa look quite imposing in the octagon. We'll see.
