John Hopoate will not put his Australian heavyweight champion's belt up for grabs in Hamilton next month, because he believes his opponent isn't worthy of a title shot.

Hopoate told the Times he did not think veteran Wilson presented him with much of a challenge, and so his Australian heavyweight belt would not be on the line at the October 3 fight.

In pre-fight "trash-talk", Hopoate dismissed Wilson's earlier comments as his opponent "trying to get some media (attention) because no-one knows who he is".

Col has been in like 10 Australian title fights...and he is what a 2 time? 3 time champ.

If thats not worthy of a shot I dont know what is...He arguably beat Hoppa's "brother" not long ago and his last fight was against, IMO, the no1 heavy on the domestic scene.

And its not up to Hoppa to make a call like that...Col is ranked by the ANBF, maybe even in the top 5 but at least in the top 10 from memory.
I dont mind a little bit of trash talking to get some feeling in the fight but to disrespect an absolute warrior of the Australian boxing scene is blasphemy.

Col Wilson has given more the Australian boxing then all these flash in the pan league players combined.

All they do is take...They take the T.V spots, they take the purses, they take what little media coverage boxing gets..and when they have packed it in and given up on boxing..Col will still be plugging away, giving guys half his age boxing lessons with 10 schooners under his belt.

Agreed, and reckon most fight fans would like to see Col horizontalize Hoppa.

why do you blokes believe everything u read and then bag. It was my decision he fights 8rds and not 10. Col doesnt care if it is for the Oz title or not he has been there and done that on 3 x occassions i think. Hop is not taking this guy lightly, what said is buisness. Col had some choice words himself. In the end 2 x boxers are going to do there best to win. As for your dickhead comment beaver go f.ck yourself.

    Dino,

In the article Hoppa is quoted as saying Col isnt worthy of challenging for his title.

    Did he really say this?

Because if he did you of all people should know thats a pretty harsh thing to say about someone like Col.

The press can be magots - no secret there. But if he said it and is subsequently quoted as saying it, who's fault is it?
