What happened to this guy? Death? Another line of work perhaps...? http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=21914&cat=boxer
I think I read somewhere that there was a torn retina injury or something to that effect. But, I may have been mistaken.
Yep, I was right. Just did a google search, and found this link. http://www.saddoboxing.com/boxingforum/29847-horace-notice.html NOTE TO MODS. This is a link from another forum. I am only posting this for reference purposes only.
Thanks for doing the research for me. Bummer. Looks like he might have been something of a prospect back then. Too early to tell though. Thanks again.
I think he was generally at his best around the time his career ended at 30-31 years of age. The record doesn't have much substance, but there are a few decent names like Proud Kilimanjaro and Anaclet Wamba. Some cats from England once told me that Horace Notice, Frank Bruno and Gary Mason all fought out of the famous Terry Lawless stable right at the same time during the 80's. They also sparred regularly with one another. I was also told that Notice wasn't a bad fighter, but he wasn't looking like world class material either. The British boxing forum can probably produce more info on him.
Horace was a good enough boxer, not a devastating hitter, not the most durable and quite a small heavy. He retired due to a detached retina. I would have favoured Mason and Bruno over him. They would have both had a couple of inches and around 30lbs on him.
Horace was better technically than Mason and Banjo.. he was number 9 in the WBC at one time and unbeaten, yet small.. 215 at most but rock solid at that.. you are right , he was prevented in 89 from boxing due to torn retina , and extreme alround eye problems, he was just before Lewis and Bruno's sparring partner alongside Gary Mason and Akinwande... incidently......... Bruno, Mason, Notice, all Duff heavy's had to have retinas repaired at some point.. i wonder if its co incidence at all...??
Notice had to retire when his eye was injured in a brawl after/during one of the Williams/Chanet fights. Although it was sad to see a fighter have to retire in such a manner, Notice was not ever likely to get to the next level in career development. I had the misfortune of watching the Notice/Waters fight (as a main event; it was meant to be McKenzie/Chitalda). Notice was OK, but even then at 200lbs, was too small and getting floored by Hughroy Currie suggests his chin may not of been up to it. As, has been mentioned, Notice was in the Lawless stable with Mason and Bomber, and after watching Mason very early on (on the Bruno/Whitherspoon bill), it was clear Notice was the third of the three.
