When youre a referee you have to pay attention to all the environment, not only the punches, holds, etc, you cannot stop a championship fight in round 1 when a fighter is down and all he has to do to finish the round is getting up, this referee has to be banned from championship boxing fights, btw, congrats to Gonzalez, finally got his well deserved win.
I actually do think that the fight was stopped slightly too early. Mares should have been given the full ten count, because that would have removed all doubt. I don't think he would have gotten up, but if he did, he would have wobbled all over the place and then it would have been stopped then, with no argument.
That not his JOB !!! His job is the Safety of the fighter, regardless of how many mins are left in a round. Mares was OUT, getting Mares to the next round would only have prolonged a beating or serious injury.
Mares was sitting there like 2 minutes after the fight got stopped and looked still wobbly when finally got up.......
Mares fan but he was clearly done, it was best they stopped it when they stopped it. He seemed like he was actually concussed as he was sort of out of it during the interview.
Mares doesn't have a glass jaw, he just have balls like any other men. It's just his balls is on his chin unlike other men where it's between their legs. I'm sure he knows how it feels like to be hit in the balls now.
He (Mares) was out of there after the first knockdown. He was ****ed after the second. The referee did a stellar job. Mares' eyes were glazed over and in different directions. There is another thread about this from John Garfield.
I think it was stopped a bit prematurely. He was trying to get up. If he had survived that round (like 10 seconds left) he could have possible gone on to win the fight. Never know. It wasn't an extremely terrible stoppage, but I probably would have given him the chance to get up first, then see his stability.
With the round coming to an end and to me it look like the ref wanted to let it go was about to but took a close look at Mares and said no I have zero complaints about this stoppage.
Im a mexican fighters fan, not only Mares, but Gonzalez, Estrada, etc, and this was clearly a bad stoppage, of course, you main priority as a referee is safety of a fighter, but this concept has a relationship to other factors like possible recovery time, etc; if we had inept referees like these in every fight, we wouldnt ve seen fights like Corrales vs Castillo, Trinidad vs Vargas, Marquez vs Vazquez, Morales vs Barrera, etc.
Yeah, like I said I don't think it was a terribly bad stoppage. And you're right, he seemed like he was going to let it go at first, but he did seem to get a good look at his eyes. :good
