Just been searching up some reach statistics and was wondering if any of them are actually measured and are accurate. One example is Sonny Liston. Now theres no doubt he had cannon ball hands and his arms were long but I find it very hard to believe he had a 7 feet wingspan. If I was to guess I’d say no more than 81 inches. Another example is Pirog who apparently has a 5ft 10 reach despite being 6ft 1. I watched the Jacobs fight and thought his arms were fairly long maybe more than his height. When I found out his reach I was shocked. The same with Dillian Whyte. He has freakishly long arms and I struggle to see how his wingspan is only 78 inches. He apparently had a 4 inch reach disadvantage against Joshua and i thought their reach looked very similair. Likewise he only had a 2 inch advantage over Parker but in the fight that advantage looked significantly larger. So how accurate do yous think the reach statistics are?
Well there is absolutely no way to verify unless you take a tape measure to someone yourself so I think it's pretty safe to just accept the reported measurement. Alot goes into reach besides arm length like chest width, shoulder width finger length hand size etc. It's very easy for your eyes to be fooled
Liston's 84 inches was bogus. Watch the Williams fight. At 0:35 they describe Williams' height and reach advantage over Liston. Meanwhile on Boxrec Williams' reach is noted as 80 inches. In the actual fight it seems to me that Williams indeed appears to have a slight reach advantage over Liston. There are other boxers around that have had different reaches noted in different fights. Reach measurements can be somewhat off.
Something I would like to point out is that people are really, really bad at guessing height. I am quite short for where I am from and just yesterday I got to watch some sparring footage of myself. I knew the other guy was slightly bigger than me and it felt like it. But holy **** did I look small in that footage I had no idea he was that much bigger. My ego took a real blow there. ****, I would like to see footage of when Ive had to spar with 175 an 200lb guys. (I am about 140)
Really depends on how they take it. Knuckle to knuckle or armpit to finger tip? Quite easy to manipulate those statistics.
Depends where the measurements are from. Before a world title fight in Japan measurements are taken as part of the pre-fight medical, and the numbers released. I'd trust them.
When we know that the sizes of the boxers are already far from being exact (Ruiz, Fury, Jessie Vargas), I dare not imagine for the reach. Besides that of Luis Ortiz has been modified by at least 15cm recently.
