He was the ref in the Alexeev-Ramirez fight.

Can't believe he was allowed to ref Klitschko-Thompson a month after the Soto-Lorenzo DQ bull****.

Recently he has been susciptible to big fight hype and has shown to be inconsistent when comparing Hatton-Mayweather with Hopkins-Calzaghe especially.

Could be his age, could be bias or he might just be a bad ref, but I used to think he was more than decent in big fights until then.

The Soto fight DQ signalled what should have been the demise but he still seems to be getting big enough fights to officiate.

Cortez was an unbelievable pain in the ass and interference during Mayweather/Hatton, but what exactly do you feel he did in Hopkins/Calzaghe?

I think he was highlighting the difference between his refereeing style between the two fights.

    He was inconsistent.

Hopkins clinched as much as Hatton would have liked to but got away with it, he was inconsitent as much as anything......Hopkins use of the head wouldn't have been tolerated by Cortez in the Hatton fight, it was almost as if he was over compensating in the B-Hop fight for being too busy in the Mayweather fight.

He also docked Hatton a point for hitting Mayweather with his back turned (no contact was made, but the intent was there) and yet he never docked Calzaghe a point for the "low blow" situations that arose.

Wow. You have been 'demoted' in post count. Pipe was just saying his count mysteriously went down lately.

Cortez is an awful ref, nowadays. Back in the day, he used to be alright. However, as soon as he started that "Fair but Firm" nonsense... he has acted like he is the star of the show. He gets WAY too involved in fights. He also seems to pick a favorite fighter during a fight, and ref one sided all night long. Hell, he pretty much argued with Ricky Hatton during the entire fights with Mayweather. I have never seen anything like it before. He would literally slap Ricky's gloves away, grab his arms and pull on them... it was awful. All along he gave Mayweather about 200 warnings for using elbows/forearms without following through.... but managed to immediately take a point from Ricky.

Cortez is just a **** ref period. Don't get it twisted. Calzaghe was rabbit punching and throwing low blows with high frequency. Cortez did nothing about that either.

Yeah... I just watched a bit of the fight again. Cortez was INSTANTLY breaking them whenever they tied up. That besides, there wasn't alot of excessive holding going on anyway. Hopkins was squirming along the ropes like a young girl being tickled as Calzaghe was trying to get at him most of the time. I thought this didn't sound right. This particular complaint anyway..

He has been declining lately, but he has been one of best refs in the past. I like Tony Weeks.

The guy used to be a very good ref . . . I think he just getting too old for the job.
